BLH provides you with the latest NHL news, rumors, and speculation featuring all the latest featuring the likes of Jack Roslovic, Pierre-Luc Dubois, Tony DeAngelo, Frederik Andersen, and more!
Did Connor McDavid have a hand in bringing Jesse Puljujarvi back to Edmonton? Read about it here.
The Oilers have a bit of a mind-bender brewing on the right side of their defence and a couple of big contracts set to expire there with some high-end prospects almost ready to take over. What is Ken Holland set to do?
NHL Rumors and Speculation
- The Fourth Period: Multiple sources confirmed both the Calgary Flames and Los Angeles Kings are also seriously interested in Dubois, though the timing of a potential trade is up in the air. It is unclear what the asking price is for Dubois, but the right package would certainly entice Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen into pulling the trigger on a trade this season.
BLH’s Thoughts: Interesting. If it’s true that CBJ aren’t looking for a futures deal, then a Sean Monahan-based package for Pierre-Luc Dubois makes sense. As for LA, I don’t see Columbus accepting an aging star like Anze Kopitar or Jeff Carter for him at all. Is Rob Blake offering a deal built around Alex Turcotte and Artur Kaliev or possible Mr. Byfield? That might change things, if so.
- Anthony Scultore (Daily Goal Horn): On the future of New York Rangers d-man Tony DeAngelo,
- “The word I am getting this early in the season is “yes.” DeAngelo is likely to be the centerpiece in any trade for a center. Last season, DeAngelo had several teams inquiring about him and if he’s on the block there will be more teams interested now.”
- Scultore Also wonders about an Oilers/Blue Jackets trade involving a goalie, “There’s also some talk that they could try something bigger. Maybe one of the two goalies in Columbus perhaps?”
BLH’s Thoughts: I have to be honest, after seeing how he behaves on social media and his troubled junior career, talented or not, DeAngelo has to tone it down a bit. Good Lord. How much attention does one individual need? I agree with the way that the Rangers coaching staff is approaching him. Now, knowing what we know about this player, do you think he’s understands why he’s been sent to the taxi squad or is he playing the victim?
I don’t think Columbus is in a hurry to move any of their goalies unless someone is willing to overpay, that is. Are the Oilers in a situation where they could be forced to cough up more than they want to to amend their netminding conundrum? I don’t think so, but give it a week.
That said, if I were GM, I’d be addressing the defence before touching the netminder. That’s the real problem in Edmonton right now.
- Dan Kingerski (Pittsburgh Hockey Now): Says there’s something to the Jack Roslovic-to-Pittsburgh rumors,
- “PHN should note we can add further corroboration to Friedman’s report. During the autumn offseason, second-hand Penguins sources told PHN that Rutherford was interested in a Penguins trade for Roslovic.”
- “The basis of a potential Penguins trade would appear to be on the blue line. Winnipeg appears to need defensemen, and the Penguins have nine, including P-O Joseph on the taxi squad.”
BLH’s Thoughts: Man, Jack Roslovic might want to consider moving to the wing full-time. Pittsburgh has Crosby, Malkin, and Jankowski as their top-three centers right now…
- Joe Haggerty (Boston Hockey Now): On the package he believes it would take for the Bruins to get Pierre-Luc Dubois,
- “Studnicka would most certainly be going the other way to Columbus if the Bruins were to somehow cobble a trade package together for Dubois, but the sense at this address is that the Bruins simply don’t have the high-end assets to get a deal like this done.”
BLH’s Thoughts: Boston isn’t getting Dubois unless they’re sending a big name back. Studnicka will be a good player one day, but Columbus needs a proper player in return for their star center.
It’s kind of funny to see these teams who used to dominate the league not too long ago going for Dubois. Boston, Chicago, LA, New York, Anaheim, and to a lesser extent (in terms of league domination) Montreal.
- Chris Johnston (Sportsnet): Regarding Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Frederik Andersen and his slow start to the year,
- “The questions are fair but it’s not time to sound the alarm bells yet. If the team is another few weeks down the road and the results don’t change, everyone will have the right to freak out. For now, it’s just best to understand that Andersen has a history of slow starts.”
BLH’s Thoughts: Same deal in Edmonton… Except Toronto has a few goalies on hand whereas the Oilers are looking to sign amateurs while they’re in Winnipeg and Toronto later on this month as Troy Grosenick and Olivier Rodrigue go through quarantine protocols.
