NHL Rumors and Speculation
- The Athletic: Reckon the San Jose Sharks should know fairly quickly going into this 2020-21 NHL Season whether or not they need to cut bait and bail or to get stuck in and compete for a playoff spot.
- “If it can’t be saved — and this should be apparent after a month or two — then it’s time to tear down whatever the team can and wait, because the basement will likely be their home for the long haul. This won’t be a quick fix. — Dom Luszczyszyn”
- Elliotte Friedman (Sportsnet): Has been speculating that former Dallas Stars winger Brett Ritchie might be heading to Calgary Flames camp as a PTO.
- Eric Engels (Sportsnet): Montreal Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin sounds hesitant with regards to in-season trades for the upcoming campaign,
- “I think it was (Pittsburgh Penguins GM) Jimmy Rutherford that mentioned that trade—there will probably be none this year,” Bergevin said. “Quarantine…it’s going to be difficult to get a player from the States…”
- James O’Brien (NBC): Could the loss of Devon Toews mean the emergence of New York Islanders defenceman Noah Dobson?
Hamonic should be a good fit with the Canucks. All indications point at a 1 year deal once Canucks move money or apply LTIR (Ferland).

- Arthur Staple (The Athletic): Said this about the Islanders and Wild potentially revisiting a deal they’d discussed last season,
- “There’s been no chatter indicating that the Zach Parise deadline deal with the Wild has been revisited at all since then, but with Johnny Boychuk’s retirement and the freeing up of his cap hit, there’s a way to make that trade work once more.”
- Ryan Guenter (NHL Trade Talk): Has posted his way-too-early Calder Trophy candidates thusly,
- 1. Igor Shesterkin (G) – New York Rangers
- 2. Bowen Byram (D) – Colorado Avalanche
- 3. Kirill Kaprizov (W) – Minnesota Wild
- Aaron Portzline (The Athletic): Head coach John Tortorella says “Pierre-Luc Dubois’ desire for a trade will be handled similarly, in one respect, to how Bobrovsky / Panarin played out two seasons ago. He adds, “They’ll confront it as a group and deal with it out in the open.”
- Danny Silver (NHLTradeRumors.me): Mat Barzal is reportedly looking for a long-term deal with a big price tag, but the Islanders are reluctant to give in to either demand. He is said to be looking for an annual salary within the $10 million range with significant term.
