NHL Rumors and Speculation
- Joe Haggerty (Boston Hockey Now): Reports materialized over the weekend that the B’s have interest in free agent D-man Ben Hutton.
- Jeremy Rutherford (The Athletic): It’s believed that Hoffman and the club have in place a one-year contract worth approximately $3.5 million to $4.5 million, and they’re waiting to make it official because of the salary-cap implications for the team.
- Eric Engels (Sportsnet): Predicts that the Canadiens will have a top-5 PP this year, Nick Suzuki will lead the club in scoring, and Shea Weber will finish top-5 in Norris Trophy voting.
- Iain MacIntyre (Sportsnet): Believes that the Vancouver Canucks could have one more move left but it’ll have to be after Michael Ferland is moved onto LTIR.
- “If Benning makes another roster move before Jan. 13 – he can probably afford at least one when forward Micheal Ferland and his $3.5-million salary goes to the injured list — expect it to be for a defenceman to help at the bottom of the lineup.”
- David Pagnotta (The Fourth Period): Is reporting that Winnipeg Jets star winger Patrik Laine is still looking for a trade away from his current club.
- “With the Winnipeg Jets set to start their training camp in six days, there does not appear to be any change as it relates to star winger Patrik Laine’s desire for a change of scenery, TFP has learned.”
- Travis Yost (TSN): Says that Derek Stepan’s stay in Ottawa could be a short one,
- “If Ottawa sees an opportunity to move Stepan at the trade deadline to a contender, they will likely be able to recoup the second-round pick or something similar in value.”
