NHL Rumors and Speculation
- Michael Russo (The Athletic): Right-wing Mats Zuccarello won’t be ready for the start of the season and may be out a good bit longer after having right arm surgery a few weeks ago.
- James Mirtle (The Athletic): On who he thinks the Maple Leafs will lose to Seattle in the upcoming expansion draft.
- “My guess is they lose Kerfoot, Holl, or Dermott, although who knows what the roster looks like by the time the Kraken get cracking. The Leafs could also get creative and protect one of those players by offering Ron Francis another asset.”
- Jim Parsons (The Hockey Writers): Evgeni Malkin has publicly stated he envisions signing a three-year contract extension when his current contract comes due in about 15 months. And, at that time, it is believed Malkin would be looking at around $10 million per season.
- Eric Duhatschek (The Athletic): Can the Calgary Flames win without an elite 1C?
- “Maybe. If they juggle the personnel this year, and slot Elias Lindholm as their No. 1 centre, drop Sean Monahan back to No. 2 and deploy Mikael Backlund as their No. 3; they’ll make up in depth what they lack in star power.”
- Tom Gulitti (NHL.com): Thinks the Wild may have to consider trading defenceman Matt Dumba or risk losing him in the expansion draft.
- Kevin Vogl (The Athletic): Reckons the Sabres will need to shell out around $6M/yr, at least, on d-man Rasmus Dahlin’s new contract.
- Leijonat.fi: Top-rated NHL draft prospect Aatu Raty was left off of his national team’s u20 squad that will be competing for gold in Edmonton, AB at the 2021 World Juniors.
- Pierre LeBrun (The Athletic): “…at some point, over the next week I do think the players will finally come back and be willing to defer a bit more salary, but not at the level the NHL asked for. And the players will justifiably want something back in return.”
