NHL Rumors and Speculation
- Eric Reese (Philly Sports Network): William Nylander (TOR) is “sounding the trade rumor alarms” in Philly and Reese believes that if the Flyers were to acquire the Swede it would cost them Travis Sanheim.
- Bill Meltzer (Hockeybuzz): “Almost zero chance of it happening. Flyers aren’t trading a young 20+ min defenseman for a forward after losing Matt Niskanen to retirement this offseason. Also, leaguewide, trade talks and contract negotiations are in holding pattern until there’s a season to announce.”
BLH’s Thoughts: If the Flyers could get their hands on a defenceman in another trade, that would make it easier for them to part with Sanheim, right?
Personally, I see some really good prospects breaking through in Philly and I’m not 100% certain that they feel the need to acquire a forward like Nylander unless some of their vets like Claude Giroux or Jake Voracek really fall off the map.
- Mark Easson (NHLRumors.com): “Patrik Laine will either get a contract extension or he will be traded by next offseason.”
- Ken Wiebe (Sportsnet): “General manager Kevin Cheveldayoff will likely wait until next offseason when more teams might have the cap room to take on Laine and be able to send the assets that the Jets want back.”
BLH’s Thoughts: If the Jets have a poor year, does the coaching staff pay the price? And in that scenario, would Laine walk back on his alleged trade request?
- Adam Gretz (NBC Sports): Chris Pronger’s season with the Edmonton Oilers was voted as the best player to only spend one season with a team.
- “Edmonton fans might hate him for demanding a trade after one year, but what a year it was! This was peak Pronger when every team he went to immediately became a Stanley Cup contender. His one year in Edmonton, they went to the Stanley Cup Final. He goes to the Ducks, they win the Stanley Cup his first year. He goes to the Flyers, they go to the Stanley Cup Final in his first year. Pronger played 30 minutes per game, shut down everybody, and was a force offensively. A laughably dominant player.”
BLH’s Thoughts: Good Christ was Pronger a force that year. Without him, the Oilers would’ve never made it to the Stanley Cup Final. It’s too bad his magic didn’t extend to keeping Edmonton’s goaltenders healthy…
- Anthony Scultore (Daily Goal Horn): Lists Jonathan Marchessault as the Vegas Golden Knights’ top candidate for trade in order to get themselves cap compliant for the upcoming 2020-21 NHL Season. Other players included Ryan Reaves, Alec Martinez, Tomas Nosek, and Nick Holden.
BLH’s Thoughts: I’ve wondered about Marchessault. I mean, if it’s not Marc-Andre Fleury getting dealt, Marchessault would not only open up a large chunk of cap space but he’d bring back value. To what degree, that’s unknown, but surely it would net the Golden Knights a decent draft pick or prospect. Both of which Vegas really needs.
