NEW: Keith Jones and Patrick Sharp think the Calgary Flames have a better chance at the playoffs this year than the Oilers. Read about that here.
NHL Rumors and Speculation
- Sportsnet: Mark Spector says that unless Edmonton Oilers winger James Neal finds his goal-scoring hands, he might find himself looking for a new team after the season.
- “James Neal had a late start and can’t find his trademark hands. Without the slick mitts that scored 19 last season, he is a guaranteed buy-out this summer.”
- The Athletic: Hailey Salvian is of the belief that teams such as the Minnesota Wild, Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Rangers, and Vancouver Canucks could be good landing spots for Calgary Flames forward Sam Bennett. To a lesser degree, she says the Pittsburgh Penguins, Detroit Red Wings, and New Jersey Devils could also be in the mix.
- The Athletic: The price that the Tampa Bay Lightning paid for Blake Coleman and Barclay Goodrow is along the lines what the Calgary Flames should get for Sam Bennett according to Eric Duhatschek.
- “When you think of what the Tampa Bay Lightning gave up at the 2020 trade deadline to land both Barclay Goodrow from the San Jose Sharks and Blake Coleman from the New Jersey Devils (both fetched first-round picks), Bennett should theoretically give a Stanley Cup contender what those two did — and potentially more.”
- The Athletic: Duhatschek also thinks that the Pittsburgh Penguins and LA Kings could get together and make a trade.
- “If Fleury isn’t currently available, and yet you believe you need a Fleury-like presence in goal, then you can imagine a scenario where the Penguins turn to Quick as an option. Hextall has his name on the Stanley Cup in 2012 when he was vice president and assistant GM of the Kings, the year Quick won the Conn Smythe Trophy as NHL playoff MVP for Los Angeles.”
- “If the Kings were to retain half of that contract, and the Penguins were to offer up Casey DeSmith ($1.25 million cap hit) and other considerations to acquire Quick, that would be an avenue they might want to explore. “
- The Athletic: Scott Burnside says the Detroit Red Wings could be a landing spot for New York Rangers defenseman Tony DeAngelo.
- “Detroit makes some sense in that Marc Staal knows DeAngelo from their shared time in New York and maybe could act as a positive influence on a young man who clearly doesn’t get a lot of things about how to be a pro. And Detroit’s defense is very much in retooling mode. It makes sense for them to inquire about a 25-year-old who had 53 points in 68 games last season.”
Some foreshadowing here?
Brian Burke with us: "Pittsburgh's the last team to win with a small, fast team. The last 3 Cup winners have been big, they play long pants hockey, they play ugly hockey. I think we need to look at that & see, have we kept up with the joneses here?"
