NHL Rumors and Speculation
- The Athletic: Evgeni Malkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins wants to remain with the club and yearns to win again there according to Rob Rossi.
- “Neither Lemieux nor majority ownership partner Ron Burkle involve themselves in the day-to-day business or hockey decisions for the Penguins. However, there’s an exception for decisions involving the Penguins’ biggest stars, a source said. If Malkin wants to stay, the Penguins will keep him. Burke and Hextall were said to understand this dynamic when signing on for their jobs.”
- New York Post: Former New York Ranger defenseman Marc Staal had some interesting things to say about an ex-teammate of his, Tony DeAngelo.
- “The guys here in Detroit, they’re all super-curious about him...He’s a lightning rod, and yeah, he yells at coaches and referees and he has these moments where he goes overboard, but he’s a good teammate.”
- Vancouver Canucks: Owner Francesco Aquilini has given GM Jim Benning and head coach Travis Green the dreaded vote of confidence.
- “I have full confidence in Jim [Benning, GM], Travis [Green, HC], and this group. I have no plans to make changes,” he concluded. Of course, that doesn’t mean they will sit idle and not make trades to improve. However, the thought of any firings should be put to rest this season.”
- The Athletic: If the Nashville Predators are to avoid slipping into years of bloated contracts and horrible results Adam Vingan reckons they should do a couple of things.
- “In the immediate future, the first thing the Predators should do is sell at the April 12 trade deadline if they are out of the running for a playoff spot by then.”
- “The next step would be to do whatever it takes to unload Ryan Johansen or Matt Duchene in the Seattle expansion draft in July. Use some of the draft capital acquired at the deadline and/or throw in a roster player to sweeten the deal.”
- Brotherly Pod: Dave Feschuk (TSN1050) is of the belief that should the Toronto Maple Leafs look to upgrade their roster at 3C they might look to use Alex Kerfoot as trade collateral.
- “It wouldn’t take a rocket scientist to (see) that Alex Kerfoot is expendable,” Feschuk said. “I don’t think he’s a guy that has overly impressed this team. Maybe it was a tough comparison, right, with the idea that you were going to come in for a million bucks cheaper and be a reasonable facsimile of Nazem Kadri; it wasn’t going to happen, that isn’t who Alex Kerfoot is. I wouldn’t be shocked if he was part of any sort of package they would concoct to bring in somebody else, because that’s clearly been – that’s going to be – a focal point.”
