NHL Rumors and Speculation

  • The Athletic: Pierre LeBrun recently wrote that he could see four teams as possible trade partners with the Nashville Predators in the event they decide to move veteran d-man Mattias Ekholm.
    • Boston Bruins – “The Bruins have their first-round pick this year intact, so that’s important in approaching Nashville. To make the money work, could Sweeney find a way to get the Preds to take John Moore’s deal ($2.75 million AAV through 2022-23) if he sweetens the pot enough?”
    • Winnipeg Jets – “The Jets have zero cap space, but I wonder if you try to move Mathieu Perreault’s expiring deal ($4.125 million AAV) to make it work money-wise while obviously needing to dangle a first-round pick and a prospect.”
    • Washington Capitals – “The Caps have their first-round pick this year, so that’s key. They’re right up against the salary cap, so they’d need to make the money work. I wonder if they could get Nashville to take Nick Jensen ($2.5 million AAV through 2022-23) if they sweeten the pot. But the Laviolette factor alone makes this something the Caps should at least look at.”
    • Philadelphia Flyers – “Can they get Shayne Gostisbehere ($4.5 million AAV through 2022-23) to be part of the deal if there’s a further sweetener? If you’re Nashville, does a first-round pick, a prospect and the hope a change of scenery refreshes Gostisbehere make sense?”
  • Maple Leafs Hot Stove: Elliotte Friedman was on Sportsnet 590 talking about the Toronto Maple Leafs and what their trade deadline plans may be like.
    • “The way the Leafs are playing and the way it is setting up, you are going for it this year. This is a year where you say, “I’ve got all of these poker chips in front of me. I am pushing them in. I am going for it.”
  • Hockey Night in Canada: Friedman noted that the Nashville Predators might only have three or four “untouchables” on their roster this year.
    • “Word is maybe only three untouchables — Roman JosiRyan Ellis and Pekka Rinne, who’s towards the end of his career. I think other than that, the Predators are willing to listen on just about anybody. That includes Filip Forsberg. That also includes, I found really interesting, Dante Fabbro.”
  • The Athletic: Jonathan Willis makes an interesting claim that the Edmonton Oilers could trade defenseman Ethan Bear to upgrade the roster elsewhere but it would be a bad idea on multiple fronts.
    • “If anything, an assessment of Bear as a trade chip makes it clear how vital his importance is to the Oilers. Almost nobody else on Edmonton’s blue line would be more difficult to replace.”
  • Brotherly Pod:  TSN 1200’s Dean Brown was asked about the futures of some of the Ottawa Senators players like Erik Gudbranson, Ryan Dzingel, Artem Anisimov, Derek Stepan, etc.
    • “A guy like Gudbranson, for example, he’s one of those older guys and if there’s a deal to keep him here, that makes sense, they would make a deal on him specifically, because he’s from here and he’s been very good with the young players and you do have to have some veterans.”
