NHL Rumors and Speculation
- The Brotherly Love Podcast: Brian Hedger of the Columbus Dispatch was asked about if there was any concern over Laine’s future with the club.
- “I think there is, absolutely,” Hedger firmly responded. “Before the trade had happened there had been some talk out there that he had certain teams possibly in mind when he mentioned he wanted a change of scenery from Winnipeg. So, with that being the case, I think that you have to automatically be a little concerned.”
BLH’s Thoughts: I like John Tortorella more these days that in the past, but this little game where he teaches the new guys who’s boss early on in their tenure is getting tiresome. At some point, the coach has to take responsibility for his own performance. It can’t always be on the star youngsters.
- The Fourth Period: Anthony Di Marco says that if things don’t work out between the Columbus Blue Jackets and Patrik Laine, there are a handful of teams GM Jarmo Kekalainen can shop him too.
- “A new contract is the expected route. But if the relationship – or the season – goes south, Kekalainen may look to explore the market on Laine, and teams like the Philadelphia Flyers, Carolina Hurricanes and Los Angeles Kings will come calling.”
BLH’s Thoughts: I sort of wondered how long it would take for Laine to get benched and now that that has happened, with him being an RFA this off-season, I’ll be very curious how those negotiations go.
- The Daily Goal Horn: Anthony Scultore says that the rumor mill has dried up with regards to Rangers d-man Anthony DeAngelo.
- “When it turned out the Rangers were not willing to retain that much salary the rumor mill came to a halt. So where do we stand on the DeAngelo trade rumor front? As far as I can tell, nowhere and Jeff Gorton has gotten the word out that he’s just as content to buy out the defenseman this summer if need be.”
BLH’s Thoughts: In my heart of hearts I want to believe that there’s not a team that would give this guy another chance after he’s blown it so many times, but I think we both know that’s not true.
- The Daily Goal Horn: Scultore also says he’s hearing that the Canucks might look to shake up the club in big way.
- “Jake Virtanen maybe a start, but I’m hearing whispers that J.T. Miller is being shopped. Changes are coming – sooner rather than later as losses mount.”
BLH’s Thoughts: Jesus… JT Miller getting shopped? Sounds like Benning could be having himself a “Chiarelli” moment. I have a hard time believing they are actually actively looking to move him though. He had one bad game, that’s no reason to get rid of him unless he’s the one that wants to go…
- Boston Hockey Now: Jimmy Murphy reckons that the Bruins have interest in Canucks winger Jake Virtanen and has floated out a trade idea that involves Jake DeBrusk heading to Vancouver.
BLH’s Thoughts: When I first read that a Virtanen for DeBrusk trade rumor was making the rounds, I couldn’t believe it. That seems so far in Vancouver’s favor, doesn’t it? I mean, the Canucks’ problem is defense I thought… Why not try and trade for a blueliner that will help the team?
