NHL Rumors and Speculation
- TSN: Pierre LeBrun is reporting that former Philadelphia Flyer legend Ron Hextall is the front-runner for the Pittsburgh Penguins GM vacancy.
- “All signs point to Ron Hextall being the front-runner right now to land the Penguins GM job, according to sources. But the Pens are still talking to other people. Next 2-3 days should be pivotal on that front.”
UPDATE: Hextall has signed a four-year contract with Pittsburgh to be their next GM and Brian Burke also agreed to a deal with the club to be its President of Hockey Ops.
But one player to keep an eye on would be Sam Bennett in CGY. Bennett was the first pick of the Burke regime in Alberta and he fits so much of what the Penguins need/want. There’s that connection.

- Sportsnet: Eric Francis says that unless Sam Bennett becomes a distraction in the locker room for the Calgary Flames, there’s no real reason to trade him. Especially if he continues to play well.
- “It doesn’t matter to them if his motivation is to up his trade value or to simply make good on the situation he’s in, as long as he is a good soldier who stands up for teammates and plays with heart and intensity, they’ll continue to be happy to have him in the fold.”
- “…the team is in no hurry to trade him, nor is there a lucrative market out there for him, keeping in mind that whatever you get in return — outside of draft picks — can’t be protected.”
- Boston Hockey Now: Jimmy Murphy reckons that the Bruins are in on Canucks winger Jake Virtanen but they’re not the only team interested in him.
- ” the team might have some competition on that front as the Pittsburgh Penguins, Buffalo Sabres and New Jersey Devils might also have eyes on the winger.”
- Sportsnet: Adding to the Virtanen speculation, Elliotte Friedman said recently that he thought the Ottawa Senators could be in on the winger too.
- “I think one of the teams that has been sniffing around Virtanen is Boston…I think Ottawa’s been a team that has had some interest with Virtanen in the past, that might be easier cause it’s Canada.”
- The Athletic: Gary Bettman may be considering extending the Canadian Division’s existence a bit longer than this season according to Pierre LeBrun. This what the NHL Commissioner had to say,
- “We recognize that, under the circumstances, this season’s divisional alignment has generated a great deal of interest and excitement. We will evaluate the experience and try to determine what we might apply going forward.”
- Don Cherry: The ex-Hockey Night in Canada pundit is of the belief that the Vancouver Canucks might be tired of coach Travis Green…
- ““I hate to say it but I’ve seen it before, they played last night like they wanted the coach fired. [Travis] Green is a good coach, I predicted he would coach in the National Hockey League.”
