NHL Rumors and Speculation
Adam Gretz (NBC Sports): Says that the New Jersey Devils should keep pending UFA Kyle Palmieri because he’s a proven scorer on a team with not many of those, he makes a positive impact defensively, and is going through one of his worst seasons ever thus his value couldn’t be lower. He adds, if the Devils do end up trading him that Boston and Edmonton could be logical landing spots.
- “Boston and Edmonton are similar in the sense that they are playoff teams that are completely top heavy and have a significant need for secondary scoring.”
NHL.com: In a recent interview with The Athletic, GM Don Waddell stated he’d been willing to trade one of his goalies and is looking for a right handed shot defenseman.
- “We don’t have a lot of [NHL salary] cap space,” Waddell said in remarks published Friday. “If we’re going to do something at the trade deadline, maybe one of the chips is one of our goalies. I can’t say which one. It depends.”
Pierre LeBrun (The Athletic): In an interview with NY Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello, LeBrun asked what kind of players the Islanders are looking for, the GM made it very clear.
- “I said it earlier, we certainly will see what is available but we won’t make a trade just for the sake of making it happen…In other words, it has to be something that works for the team, that works with reference to the chemistry; it doesn’t upset the room, all the variables that to me are extremely important.”
The Daily Goal Horn: Says one of the more talked about trade options for the Isles in recent days is the Devils Kyle Palmieri. Other names attached to the Islanders range from Taylor Hall, Dustin Brown, and Nick Foligno.
Jimmy Murphy (Boston Hockey Now): Wonders if Anaheim Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf coule re-unite with former GM Brian Burke in Pittsburgh now that Evgeni Malkin is on the shelf and considered week-to-week.
Shug McSween (NHLtraderumors.me): Believes the three most likely players to be traded out of Calgary are,
- Sam Bennett (C) – At 24-years-old and a restricted free-agent next season there’s going to be interest on taking a flyer on him.
- David Rittich (G) – Teams that have called Calgary include the Washington Capitals, Colorado Avalanche and the Edmonton Oilers.
- Derek Ryan (C) – Any deal for Ryan wouldn’t be a blockbuster but he could help a contender kill penalties and win faceoffs.
Ansar Khan (mlive.com): In addition to Bobby Ryan, the list of UFAs the Red Wings might be able to move for picks includes forward Sam Gagner and defensemen Marc Staal and Jon Merrill. Yzerman could get offers for goaltender Jonathan Bernier and center Luke Glendening but might be hesitant to move either.
