NHL Rumors and Speculation
Darren Dreger (TSN): The NHL wants to take a better look at a prospects event that could be in early July (in Canada). It’ll have a combine-type of event and potentially a three team round robin. All the top draft-eligible players are working together but there’s a lot to comb through at this stage.
John Hoven (Maven’s Manor): AEG (LA Kings owners) on fans coming back to the Staples Center,
- “We’re getting closer. State Guidelines were posted today for outdoor return of sports. The next step is indoors. We’re talking with the state. We think our fans could be back in a few weeks.”
Elliotte Friedman (Sportsnet): On what he’s hearing with regards to the future of Buffalo Sabres winger Taylor Hall, the Montreal Canadiens not being done trading, Nashville Predators d-man Ryan Ellis, and what’s going to happen with Columbus Blue Jackets defender David Savard,
- “I do think there’s some interest in him (Hall). I think the Islanders are one, Florida potentially is another. We’ll see where this goes. It’ll come down to price. The best thing that will happen for Buffalo is a bidding war that drives up the price, that’s what they want.”
- “I think Marc Bergevin had something going with Artturi Lehkonen to create some cap space.”
- “I do think Nashville were asked (about moving Ryan Ellis), would they consider it? I think some teams reached out and that Nashville had to at least think about it because I think the offers were legit, but I don’t know what’s going to happen.”
- “I’m most curious to see what happens with David Savard. I think Colorado is there, and in stealth mode if they can fit him in, Tampa Bay as well. The Lightning think they can repeat.”
Friedman also wonders if Sabres forward Casey Middlestadt could benefit from a change of scenery in a potential trade deadline move.
George Richards (Florida Hockey Now): Is speculating that Ottawa Senators defenseman Erik Gudbranson, Mattias Ekholm, David Savard, and Ryan Ellis could be potential trade options.
- “The Panthers are deep on defense but no one like Aaron Ekblad. They cannot replace him with what’s here. Bill Zito was already shopping for additional defensemen. Calls will be made.”
Adrian Dater (Colorado Hockey Now): Said this about the Avalanche and some potential trade deadline plans they might have,
- “I’m hearing that the Colorado Avalanche are kicking tires on Carolina goaltender James Reimer. He has a $3.4M cap hit. I doubt it will happen, but there’s been some talk.”
Michael Russo (The Athletic): Minnesota Wild GM Bill Guerin is at least interested in extending Ian Cole’s contract beyond this season. It’s believed Minnesota’s preference is to sign Matthew Boldy for the 2021-22 season and thus not burn the first year of his entry-level deal this season.
Mike Harrington (Buffalo News): Says Buffalo Sabres blueliner Brandon Montour could be someone the Florida Panthers look at after Aaron Ekblad’s injury.
Murat Ates (The Athletic): Suggests that the Winnipeg Jets should go after Arizona Coyotes defender Alex Goligoski.
Chad DeDominicis (Expected Buffalo): Over the last 48 hours it is about 80% likely that Jim Rutherford will join the Buffalo Sabres along with Jason Karmanos.
Jimmy Murphy (Boston Hockey Now): Says an NHL Executive put the odds at forward David Krejci being traded at 100,000 to 1. Murphy also said recently that the Boston Bruins want to shake up their bottom-six forwards. Sean Kuraly and Chris Wagner are “too comfortable”.
