NHL Rumors and Speculation
Saad Yousuf of The Athletic: The Dallas Stars have several players who could be eyed as the NHL Trade Deadline approaches. While John Klingberg is off-limits it would appear, Esa Lindell and Jamie Oleksiak are expendable. Lindell has several years left on his contract but Oleksiak is a UFA after the season. Oleksiak would probably return a middling draft pick.
Jesse Granger of The Athletic: Vegas is one of those many teams right up against the salary cap. Also, it does feel almost too quiet. Vegas has been aggressive in nearly every trade deadline during its existence. Nick Holden and Ryan Reaves are players who could be moved to relieve some cap space.
Jeff Gordon of St. Louis Post-Dispatch: St. Louis Blues forward Mike Hoffman has struggled this season and was a healthy scratch on the weekend. He’s been playing on the third line and not getting much power play time. Teams like the Boston Bruins, New York Islanders and Toronto Maple Leafs could come calling for Hoffman.
Joe Smith and Aaron Portzline (The Athletic): Are thinking Columbus Blue Jackets defender David Savard might be the perfect fit for the Tampa Bay Lightning. Smith had this to add with regards to what Tampa might be willing to spend to get the right-handed blueliner,
- “The Lightning don’t have a second-rounder in each of the next couple drafts, but they have their first and third-rounders on up. And they’ve got some young forward prospects, including centers, who may be of interest to teams. I asked assistant GM Stacy Roest recently if they’d be willing to move these young assets, and he seemed open to it.”
NHLTradeRumors.me: The Sharks are expected to trade goaltender Devan Dubnyk, and are willing to listen to offers on just about everyone else on their roster as well, including Karlsson and Brent Burns.
- “Philadelphia waived Shayne Gostisbehere on Tuesday in a move that was supposedly made to free up some cap space for a bigger move. Some feel the ‘bigger’ move is this proposed deal with the Red Wings.”
The Fourth Period: It appears Flyers GM Chuck Fletcher is working the lines and trying to shake up his roster.
- “In recent weeks, the Flyers have been linked to Nashville Predators defenceman Ryan Ellis and Buffalo Sabres captain Jack Eichel, both of whom are currently injured, with Eichel possibly done for the season.”
Lyle Richardson (Spector’s Hockey): The Sabres could agree to absorb up to half of Hall’s cap hit if it would facilitate a trade that fetches a healthy return including a first-round pick.
Pierre LeBrun (The Athletic): “There are several goaltenders who could be available before the trade deadline. Carolina Hurricanes GM Don Waddell could move James Reimer or Alex Nedeljkovic for the right price. Might the Columbus Blue Jackets might move Elvis Merzlikins or Joonas Korpisalo and what could the Arizona Coyotes do with Darcy Kuemper or Antti Raanta. I doubt Jonathan Quick of the Los Angeles Kings or Chris Driedger of the Florida Panthers gets moved.”
Dan Rosen (NHL.com): Believes losing top defenseman Aaron Ekblad (fractured leg) for 12 weeks puts the emphasis on the Florida Panthers to acquire a blueliner before the April 12 trade deadline. Options could include the Buffalo Sabres’ Brandon Montour, Columbus Blue Jackets’ David Savard, New Jersey Devils’ Sami Vatanen and New York Rangers Tony DeAngelo.
The Daily Goal Horn: Is reporting that things aren’t too rosy between Johnny Hockey and his new coach Darryl Sutter. They had this to say with regards to the immediate future of Calgary Flames skiller Johnny Gaudreau.
- “Will this be the last straw for Gaudreau in Calgary? He has just one more year remaining on his deal which pays him $6.75 million. While conventional wisdom suggests a larger return at the NHL Draft, a deal to a team looking for 27 year-old scoring forward could be possible. The Flyers have been linked to Johnny Hockey for a long time, but they need defense so the timing isn’t right.”
TDGH also had this little tidbit pertaining to a potential trade between the Boston Bruins and Buffalo Sabres,
- “While the asking price for a player like Taylor Hall is a first round pick to start, maybe the Bruins can work with Buffalo on a much larger deal involving DeBrusk, and maybe Brandon Montour on defense the other way. Their would need to be some cap magic as well, but that could be done with a third party like Chicago or Detroit.”
