NHL Rumors and Speculation
NHL Trade Rumors: The Blue Jackets, they are likely put up the for sale sign this weekend and could move the likes of Foligno, Savard, Michael Del Zotto and even Patrik Laine, who’s been linked to the Carolina Hurricanes.
- The Boston Bruins and Colorado Avalanche are reportedly two teams very interested (in Alex Iafallo) and have reached out to gauge the asking price from Blake. It’s likely any deal fetches the Kings at least one second-round pick and a mid-level prospect.
- General manager Kyle Dubas is willing to trade high draft picks or prospects and reportedly have also been open to moving forwards Alexander Kerfoot, Pierre Engvall and defenseman Travis Dermott.
- Teams involved in trade talks (for Taylor Hall) include the Florida Panthers, Boston Bruins, Edmonton Oilers, Colorado Avalanche and Toronto Maple Leafs. All have different levels of interest and some are willing to give up more than others to get a deal done.
Jimmy Murphy (Boston Hockey NOW): Don Sweeney and the Bruins found themselves in a familiar position on Thursday. Boston did not land Kyle Palmieri (their perceived top target). Instead, Palmieri wound up with the New York Islanders along with Travis Zajac. Maybe the issue was that first-round draft pick. No one knows if Jack Studnicka or Jake DeBrusk were offered but it’s a possibility.
- Anaheim GM Bob Murray and Bruins GM Don Sweeney are believed to be talking again. Murray is fielding calls on Josh Manson even if he does not want to admit it and assistant GM John Ferguson Jr. was in the “California Triangle” this week
Adrian Dater: Goaltender James Reimer is still on the Colorado Avalanche’s goalies to watch list.
Bruce Garrioch: Ottawa Senators defenseman Mike Reilly said there have been some talks between his agent and the Sens. Reilly added they’ll see where this goes over the next few days ahead of the deadline.
Dan Rosen (NHL.com): The San Jose Sharks are in an odd sort of position as the weekend approaches. They could be buyers, sellers, or even make lateral moves to help their team. Doug Wilson made it clear they will not trade their first-round pick (as of March 12th). That eliminates them from making a major deal as far as being a buyer.
Eric Francis (Sportsnet): The Calgary Flames need to make some changes, and that likely needs to start with forward Johnny Gaudreau. He has a year left on his contract before becoming a UFA.
Emily Sadler of Sportsnet: Looking at nine defenseman that could be dealt by the NHL trade deadline on Monday.
- David Savard – Columbus Blue Jackets – Pending UFA – $4.25 million – Top defenseman if Mattias Ekholm is off the board.
- Brandon Montour – Buffalo Sabres – Pending UFA – $3.85 million – Could the Sabres retain salary to increase the return?
- Josh Manson – Anaheim Ducks – One year left at $4.1 million – Ducks not in a rush to move him. Has a 12-team no-trade clause.
- Vince Dunn – St. Louis Blues – Pending RFA – $1.875 million – Will the Blues look to shake things up. Will the Montreal Canadiens be interested?
- Dmitry Kulikov – New Jersey Devils – Pending UFA – $1.15 million – Good depth on a low cap hit.
- Alex Goligoski – Arizona Coyotes – Pending UFA – $5.475 million – In a playoff spot but could sell to recoup some assets. Has an eight-team no-trade clause.
- Jamie Oleksiak – Dallas Stars – Pending UFA – $2.1375 million – Maple Leafs may have interest according to Elliotte Friedman.
- Marc Staal – Detroit Red Wings – Pending UFA – $5.7 million – Wings would likely have to retain salary.
- Mattias Ekholm – Nashville Predators – One year left at $3.75 million – Probably not going to be available at the deadline.
Jordan Hall (NBC Sports Philadelphia): Scott Laughton rumors have persisted for some time and they are definitely linked to Ron Hextall and the Pittsburgh Penguins. This is not something that was blown out of proportion. Most just presumed that it was.
Daniel Nugent-Bowman (The Athletic): Edmonton Oilers GM Ken Holland says he won’t deal his 2021 first-round pick for a rental. He would be open to it for a player with term.
Sportsnet: Take Sam Bennett’s name off of the trade boards. Apparently he is no longer unhappy in Calgary and would like to stay to play for Darryl Sutter’s team.
- “I’m happy playing under Darryl,” said Bennett to media earlier this week. “I think I’ve gotten more opportunity and I’ve been able to play my game a little bit more.” When outright asked if his mind has changed about a trade and if he wants to stay put, he said, “Ya, absolutely.”
