NHL Rumors and Speculation
Murat Ates: With Winnipeg Jets defenseman Nathan Beaulieu out for the season, the Jets and can put him on the LTIR and gain an additional $1.25 million in salary relief. The Jets are at around $3.5 million already before Beaulieu.
Darren Dreger: “Unfortunate, but the Jets will be able to use Beaulieu’s salary in LTI which could help open up trade opportunities to bolster the blueline.”
Tom Gulitti of NHL.com: Brian Burke said that they will look at the center trade market ahead of the NHL trade deadline after injuries to Evgeni Malkin and Teddy Blueger.
- “People are stepping up,” Burke told the newspaper. “I’m not sure it was as dire a need as it was. But when two of your top four centers go down, you start looking around.”
Michael Traikos of the Toronto Sun: Toronto Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas has already he’d be open to trading a top prospect. Would he trade Nick Robertson for Taylor Hall? Rasmus Sandin for Kyle Palmieri? Rodion Amirov for Marc Staal?
Eric Engels of Sportsnet: If the Nashville Predators make defenseman Mattias Ekholm available at the deadline, the Canadiens have the assets to get a deal done. They’d likely be okay with moving a first. Having to give up two prospects not named Cole Caufield likely okay too. The Canadiens would need to move out some salary – maybe Joel Armia or Artturi Lehkonen.
Rick Carpiniello (The Athletic): Gives his reason as to why he thinks Ryan Strome’s name keeps finding itself in the rumor mill.
- “Strome’s name fills the trade bill because, mostly, the Rangers figure to be in the market for a top-level stud young center during the coming offseason, or during the next season, or in the following offseason as they get set to put the final touches on a soon-to-be contender.”
Tarik El-Bashir (The Athletic): Took a look at some forward options for the Caps and came up with some interesting names. He believes Washington would target players like Luke Glendening, Riley Nash, Mikael Granlund, and Erik Haula. He also mentioned that since Sam Bennett is available it could be a more interesting option for GM Brian MacLellan.
Fluto Shinzawa (The Athletic): Recently examined how the Boston Bruins could address their need for a left-side defenseman and a scoring right wing.
Vancouver’s Alex Edler, Nashville’s Mattias Ekholm, Arizona’s Alex Goligoski, Detroit’s Jon Merrill and Ottawa’s Mike Reilly were among his recent suggestions for blue-line targets.
Columbus’ Riley Nash, New Jersey’s Kyle Palmieri and Miles Wood, Anaheim’s Rickard Rakell, and Detroit’s Bobby Ryan were his proposed forward trade options.
