NHL Rumors and Speculation
Bob Stauffer (630CHED): Says three Eastern Conference teams could target Edmonton Oilers winger Zack Kassian this summer in an attempt to add some more toughness to their lineup.
Sean Shapiro (The Athletic): Says that ESPN is looking to add Wayne Gretzky to their broadcasting team when the season opens up in 2021-22.
- “ESPN has approached and pitched Wayne Gretzky about a broadcasting role, according to multiple sources. Whether Gretzky, an alternate governor for the Edmonton Oilers, is interested is unknown, but at this point ESPN hasn’t been given a “no.””
Ken Warren (Ottawa Sun): The Ottawa Senators are only able to protect one of Matt Murray, Joey Daccord and Filip Gustavsson for the Seattle Kraken expansion draft in July.
- The Senators will likely leave Murray exposed for expansion draft as he has had injury issues and has three years and $21 million left on his contract.
Jim Parsons (NHL Trade Talk): Says former New York Rangers captain Mark Messier wants to step in and help his former team out after Messier called out his former team earlier in the week,
- “In my opinion, if you’re going to win, you got to be able to win in the street and the alley. I, particularly, would not have built the team that didn’t have answers in this regard. I’ve made it very clear that I’ve been standing by ready to help out in any way for many years. I don’t really know what else to say.”
Anthony Scultore (The Daily Goal Horn): Says that maybe the New York Rangers should target some big name tough guys in the off-season because their tougher prospects won’t be ready for a while yet.
- “There are some promising prospects that could be that answer in the future like Will Cuylle and Braden Schneider but they aren’t NHL ready yet. Ryan Reaves out in Vegas has one more year on his contract, maybe the Rangers should get ahead of it an aim for a trade this summer. Milan Lucic just waived his no-move clause and could be a target as well if the Flames would eat some of his cap hit.”
