NHL Rumors and Speculation

Jonthan Willis (The Athletic) has a list of three players who fit the description of what the Edmonton Oilers are in need of prior to the NHL Trade deadline.

“He plays brutal defensive minutes on a bad team, but the Red Wings have been hammered on the shot clock and also on the scoreboard with him on the ice, with opponents running up a 95-61 goal differential over the past three seasons.”

“He’s getting regular penalty kill time and faring as well as ever. At five-on-five, he has splendid on-ice metrics and personal scoring totals, well in line with his established level of play.”

“He’s a very good penalty killer across the board, and importantly he’s also extremely disciplined at five-on-five. It’s probably more important for a regular penalty killer to stay out of the box than it is for any other forward, and Sutter is far more likely to draw a penalty than he is to take one, despite the longstanding Sutter reputation for gritty play. Such discipline should be applauded.”

Willis also recently posted an article where he presented some of the 100-odd fan-submitted trade proposals to NHL execs and prospect guru Corey Pronman. Here are some of those mock trades,

“Now imagine that Ken Holland asks you to waive your no-trade clause so you can move to Buffalo and play for the last-place Sabres. Not a long conversation, is it?” – Willis

  • Is there a path to the Oilers renting Hall without sending one of their multi-year deals back the other way?

“Hall back to Edmonton would be a great story. Maybe the way to do it is to trade Buffalo a first-round pick and Alex Chiasson. Then flip, say, a fifth-rounder to a third team in exchange for them retaining one-quarter of Hall’s remaining cost.” – NHL Exec.

“But I can’t see Kahun on an expiring deal working for the Devils. He’s had a tough platform year, but I still think he would get north of $2 million in arbitration, so he’d be a walkaway (rather than receiving a qualifying offer).” – NHL Exec.

“Philly says yes in a heartbeat. You’re making a high-upside bet on a young, cheap asset with term who very recently (last season) sent some solid signals with underlying numbers.” – NHL Exec.

“Talent-wise it’s a fair deal. The issue Vancouver may have is that Benson is waiver eligible next season, so they need to be confident he could make it. They would likely much prefer a second-round pick or younger prospect.” – Pronman

  • Jake DeBrusk for Caleb Jones, Zack Kassian and a 2022 second-round pick

“Bruins say no.” – NHL Exec

“The value isn’t enough. Teams are going to be leery of qualifying Kahun given his potential arbitration award, and Marody-Samorukov just doesn’t give the Coyotes sufficient return to move on from Garland.” – Willis

  • Rickard Rakell for Philip Broberg, Kassian and a 2022 second-round pick

“My read, for what it’s worth, is that I’d do it as Edmonton but probably wouldn’t as Anaheim, but I don’t have a great feel for Broberg’s current value.” – Willis

“I think that deal is close… Broberg would go in the latter half of the first if they redid his draft, so he ticks that box. Anaheim likely wants a little more future value, but you’re close.” – Pronman

“I don’t think Archibald moves the needle whereas I think this proposal likely grossly underrates Eller, who would be a huge upgrade for Edmonton compared to some other rumoured candidates, like Brandon Sutter. Then you have 25-year-old RFA Vrana going for an expiring RNH, and I’m not sure I see the utility for a Washington team biased to winning now with this core.” – NHL Exec.
