NHL Rumors and Speculation

Elliot Teaford: Anaheim Ducks defenseman Hampus Lindholm could miss the remainder of the season with a fractured wrist.

  • It hasn’t been a great year for the Anaheim Ducks and Ryan Getzlaf. He was willing to accept a trade at the deadline but it would have been to a team of his choosing, but in the in end a deal couldn’t be worked out. He’ll be a pending UFA and will have to take a big paycut from his current $8.5 million.

Elliotte Friedman: The Winnipeg Jets asked the Columbus Blue Jackets about defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov at the trade deadline.

  • The Toronto Maple Leafs considered Conor Garland before trading for Nick Foligno but nothing was close.
  • The Vegas Golden Knights and Montreal Canadiens approached the Anaheim Ducks about Ryan Getzlat but it never got close.
  • The New York Islanders, Vegas Golden Knights, and St. Louis Blues also made hard pitches for Boston Bruins forward Taylor Hall.
  • Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff said the Jets “tried to do a few things that might have been big swings. But the players we targeted didn’t move.”

Joe Sakic: Says that this is the deepest the Colorado Avalanche will ever be.

Mike Sielski: A roster shakeup could be in store for the Philadelpha Flyers during the off-season.

  • The Flyers don’t plan on changing the coaching staff this off-season.

Adam Vignan: The Nashville Predators plan on holding talks with defenseman Mattias Ekholm regarding his future with the team this off-season.

Mark Poloncarz: The Buffalo Sabres will allow 100% capacity next season. However, all fans must be vaccinated to enter.

Seattle Kraken: GM Ron Francis on the Kraken’s head coaching search.

  • “We’re looking to hire our head coach and staff as we head into the second quarter… We think it’s prudent on our part to wait and see who is all out there when making that final decision.”

Aaron Portzline: Coach John Tortorella is in the final year of his contract, as are his assistant coaches Brad Shaw and Brad Larsen. Tortorella has shown no signs that he’s done coaching, but he may be on his way out of Columbus, a mutual decision with management. If Tortorella leaves, Kekalainen will need to hire a new coach, and perhaps an entirely new coaching staff.

The Deadline Deals That Didn’t Happen

The Penguins and Anaheim Ducks came so close on a trade for Deslauriers that an article was published on the topic. Friedman reported that a deal was done, but then backtracked as talks fell apart.

The Oilers, who also missed out on Patrik Nemeth, ended up finding their stay-at-home defenseman in the New Jersey Devils’ Dmitry Kulikov.

The Jets mistake may have been focusing too much on defensemen who weren’t truly available. Elliotte Friedman believes that the team tried to acquire either Gavrikov or Goligoski, or perhaps even both. Gavrikov would have been a very nice addition for the Jets, but by all accounts the young Columbus Blue Jackets defender was not really for sale.

  • Taylor Hall to the New York Islanders or Vegas Golden Knights

Two other teams made a strong push and that was the Islanders and the Golden Knights. Hall was even open to joining New York, but once they acquired Kyle Palmieri and Travis Zajac he turned his focus to Boston even though the Isles maintained interest.

Buffalo asked Boston about moving one of their promising young keepers, as both Vladar and Swayman have shown NHL ability in recent weeks as the injury replacements in the Bruins net.

  • Conor Garland to the Toronto Maple Leafs or Vegas Golden Knights

The Golden Knights were linked to Garland, but could not make a deal work with their division rival.

  • Ryan Getzlaf to the Vegas Golden Knights or Montreal Canadiens

Vegas was close to adding Anaheim captain Getzlaf and the career Duck was open to the nearby move. However, Vegas allegedly was unwilling to meet the trade demands for the veteran center.

The Penguins had their sights first set on Zajac from New Jersey, then Getzlaf, and finally Carter.
