NHL Rumors and Speculation

Eric Duhatschek (The Athletic): Wonders if the Philadelphia Flyers and the Calgary Flames might get together and make a trade this off-season.

  • “Just because Philadelphia and Calgary both had such underwhelming seasons — and there’s been years of speculation now that the Flyers and Flames would be good trading partners — you’d have to think there’d be communication back and forth there. You’re not going to pry Sean Couturier out of there, but what about Travis Konecny and/or Nolan Patrick? It sounds as if a fresh start might be just what Patrick needs, and a chance to land the nephew of former Flames’ defenceman James Patrick might represent the sort of young talent that the Flames need to inject into their line-up.”

Lyle Richardson (Spector’s Hockey): Had this to say on the latest Jack Eichel rumors linking him to the Coyotes,

  • I believe the Los Angeles Kings could be the front-runners if the Sabres put Eichel on the trade block. They’ve got the cap space, plenty of draft picks, and considerable depth in prospects and promising roster players to make a competitive bid if general manager Rob Blake is so inclined.”

Max Bultman (THE ATHLETIC): Reported Detroit Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman believes his club must add more scoring and shore up the depth on the left side of his blue line.

Sam Carchidi (Philadelphia Inquirer): TSN reported that Philadelphia Flyers forward Nolan Patrick could be one player looking for a change of scenery for next season. A team spokesperson said Patrick didn’t want to comment on the report.

  • “He obviously struggled this year, but you don’t give up on a player with his past pedigree. In junior, he was a better player than Matt Barzal and Brayden Point. I don’t think that talent just disappears. To me, this upcoming season is his show-me year. Or else.”

Elliotte Friedman also mentioned during his weekly appearance on Oilers Now that the Vancouver Canucks might be dealing with one or two players who’d like to be moved. Luckily for us, I’ve got a well placed source out west there and I asked them who it was that wanted out.

I was told that the Canucks are looking to free up some cap room in order to re-sign Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes as they’re looking for BIG raises each. I’m talking $7M/yr or more.

I thought that JT Miller with all his complaining lately would be one of the guys who wants out but I guess he likes playing for freshly extender head coach Travis Green. Actually, Brock Boeser might not be that happy and that Pettersson has not been the most content lately.

That said, I can’t see the team moving Pettersson or Miller unless they make it official that they want out. On the other hand, Boeser was in the rumors a bit last off-season and this year…
