HEAVEN AND HELL STAYING IN THE NHL

WAIVERS

There are several attractive targets available today, I would make a claim for sure. Here are the players worth choosing, in order of preference:

  1. LC Logan Brown, St. Louis Blues. He’s 6.06, 23, plays center. He has 79 points in 91 AHL games, that’s 35 points NHLE. If he doesn’t work out, you’re still the third (really, second) team to have a long look at a unicorn. Did I mention he’s a 6.06 center? 1-8-9 in 30 NHL games, his career five on five pts-60 is 1.36 in the world’s best league. Someone will take him before Edmonton has a chance, but my goodness this is a gigantic opportunity here.
  2. LW Richard Panik, NY Islanders. He is $2.75 on the cap, two years remaining. His possession stats are solid compared to teammates and has been for some time. His offensive output fell off last year and he is 30, but I like him as a waiver pickup. Oilers won’t take him but someone should consider it.
  3. RC Dylan Gambrell, San Jose Sharks. His underlying numbers are not fab, but he’s a right center with two-way skill with 110 NHL games in the role. Sometimes losing teams employ players who thrive on better ones. I would take a chance with Gambrell.

BLH’s Thoughts: If the Oilers picked up Logan Brown, would he be the 4th line center? I’m thinking that because it looks like Foegele-Ryan-Kassian is set to be the 3rd line and I do remember Brown being unhappy in Ottawa because when they played him, it was down the lineup a bit… Also, does him being an American play into a Canadian team claiming him?

Colton Sceviour makes strong case to stay with Edmonton Oilers
  • A fourth-round pick of the Dallas Stars in 2007, Sceviour, 32, is a veteran of 500 NHL games. The Red Deer product played two and-a-half seasons with the Stars before moving on to play with the Florida Panthers and then the Pittsburgh Penguins.
  • Sceviour is a versatile player who can be used in a number of roles with the Oilers. During the pre-season he played all three forward positions and was an effective penalty killer.
  • Considering the Oilers waived forward Kyle Turris on Sunday and Archibald won’t be back anytime soon, Sceviour presents a good option for the club.
  • Sceviour punctuated his pre-season with an assist in a 3-2 win against the Vancouver Canucks and will now have to play the waiting game to see if he’s offered a spot on the Oilers roster Monday.

BLH’s Thoughts: By the time this is published, I imagine we’ll know whether or not Sceviour was signed by Edmonton. If I’m reading the tea leaves correctly, I think there’s a chance he has other options on the table though. So we’ll see…

I thought he was okay and got better as camp wore on and I wouldn’t mind him spending the year in Edmonton. If he decides to ply his trade elsewhere, okay. The Oilers will find somebody else to take on the role and at the end of the day we’re talking about a 4th line RW.

The Daily Goal Horn

  • Adam Fox and his agent Matt Keator have to be smiling from ear-to-ear all summer. The 23 year-old won the Norris Trophy in just his second season and young defensemen like Cale Makar and Miro Heiskanen all signed lucrative deals.
  • Jack Eichel is expected to be traded at some point during the 2021-22 season… Many teams who were rumored to be in this summer have already been ruled out in Minnesota, Vegas, Montreal, and Boston. So what are the likely landing spots?
    • Calgary Flames: On a recent appearance on The Jeff Marek Show, Elliotte Friedman revealed that the Calgary Flames tried hard to acquire Eichel in the offseason. He also added that Eichel never said he wouldn’t want to play there.
    • Anaheim Ducks: This is the team that makes the most sense. They have the cap space and the prospects to get a deal done. Anaheim is also not ready to win now, which means not having Eichel play a majority of this season should not impact them. If Buffalo is willing to do a deal without Trevor Zegras and Jamie Drysdale involved, this could be a match.
  • Yesterday, Islanders coach Barry Trotz told the media that GM Lou Lamoriello isn’t finished assembling the roster. According to Arthur Staple, he believes that Lou may be looking to deal some of his extras before having to finalize his roster on Monday at 5 PM ET.
