Random Thoughts: Connor McDavid is a freak and Ryan Nugent-Apple Tree
- Connor McDavid is a freak. He’s unlike any other player to ever suit up in the National Hockey League and the goal he scored last night is one that can only be pulled off by him. Period.
- A sublime passer in his own right, RNH is putting pucks on sticks with purpose and it’s translating into one of his best starts in terms of points production that he’s ever had, and I’m thinking he looks about as confident as he has in years.
- If we don’t get Jack Michaels calling games for the playoffs then we should riot.
- …now that Yamo has a couple of goals under his belt, he’s almost looking like a different player that’s lighter on his feet than he was a few weeks ago…
BLH’s Thoughts: It’s funny what happens to a young player’s game when he gets even the slightest bit of confidence. Both Yamo and Pulju broke out of their respective slumps this weekend and all pretty much thanks to Leon Draisaitl if I recall correctly.
I second the notion that Jack Michaels should get a promotion. Harnarayan Ryan is not the right man for the national games because the emotion he parlays into his commentary feels lacking. Don’t get me wrong, the guy has worked his ass off to get where he is and good on him for that, I just don’t dig his commentary compared to Jack Michaels’.
Here are a couple of YouTube clips for you to draw your own conclusion. First is Ryan and second is Michaels.

Edmonton Oilers’ Bison King a beast against the New York Rangers
- Puljujarvi had gone six games without a goal, until Leon Draisaitl set him for a sitter on a two-on-one empty-net against Nashville, with Draisaitl passing up a hat-trick shot. Now, he’s got three in the last two games to get to five in the first 10 games, and 12 points.
- Puljujarvi, very much in the running for a Finnish 2022 Olympic team spot, attempted 10 shots Friday. Three were on net, four were blocked and three went wide on Aleksandar Georgiev. He did all this with fellow Finn, Jari Kurri, in the house to support Kevin Lowe on his jersey (4) retirement. Coincidence?
- The Bison King, who has 20 goals in his last 65 Oilers games over two seasons, has never looked happier than he is now. He was on the ice when McDavid scored that fantastic goal with three minutes left, beating four guys to score on Georgiev.
“Nuge (Ryan Nugent-Hopkins) gave me the pass when I was going full-speed. And, yeah, I tried a slap-shot and it got in. Was good shot, maybe I should do this more,” he said.

So the goals are similar, but I don’t think the two are stylistically a comparable. Jesse has a bit farther to go before he has a shot like Jari did. Now, if JP can get to Kurri’s level, he might be one of the best Finns of all-time, but for the time being, I love where he’s trending as… Biisoni Kuningas

The Hockey Writers Rumors
- When asked what he was thinking taking on four New York Rangers players and beating them all, including goaltender Alexandar Georgiev, McDavid said, he gets paid to score big goals and he was just doing his job.
- There’s been chatter that the Maple Leafs are currently shopping a defenseman and the two names mentioned most often are Dermott’s and Justin Holl’s. Nick Kypreos reports that the Leafs have made it clear to NHL clubs that both players are available in trade discussions and the expected return is an upper-mid-round draft pick or a more rugged defenseman with less term on his contract.
- According to Michael Traikos of the Toronto Sun, (Jack) Campbell’s agent says that reports the Maple Leafs and the goaltender are already engaged in contract discussions are false.
- As per Aaron Portzline of The Athletic, that talk out of Columbus that goalie Joonas Korpisalo could be on the move has increased. There were whispers around the NHL claiming GM Jarmo Kekalainen was taking calls on the netminder and now it seems he is officially available.
“The best the Blue Jackets could do last summer was a mid-to-late round draft pick or a lukewarm prospect, so they waited for a better market to emerge. With Korpisalo headed to UFA status, they may not get much more.” – Aaron Portzline, The Athletic
BLH’s Thoughts: If Korpisalo is going to be acquired on the cheap and Mike Smith isn’t getting any healthier, maybe he’d be a good gamble for Edmonton? What’s the worst that could happen? Korpisalo isn’t any better with the Oilers than he was with Columbus? Meh. Edmonton still has Skinner in Bakersfield.
