Edmonton Oilers grinder out four to six weeks with lower body injury
  • This in from the Edmonton Oilers, news that grinding forward Devin Shore will be out four-to-six weeks with a lower body injury: “Coach Tippett announced today that Devin Shore will miss 4-6 weeks after sustaining a lower-body injury on Friday. Speedy recovery for 14.”
  • Tippett also said that Mike Smith skated for an hour today at practice and will go on the trip. It’s not determined if Ryan McLeod will be called up.
  • In the line-up Zack Kassian was promoted to the second line with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Zach Hyman, while Kailer Yamamoto was put on the third line with Derek Ryan and Warren Foegele.

BLH’s Thoughts: Ah! Tough break for Shore. He looked like he was just finding his form too.

If Ryan McLeod is going to come up, I don’t know if it’ll be as a center because he simply hasn’t learned to love the muck. Actually, It wouldn’t be any surprise to me if he became surplus to requirements in Edmonton and Holland used him as trade fodder to bring in the center who can play the way Tippett wants his 3C to play.

I’m very curious to see how the bottom nine goes versus Detroit because that could determine whether or not we see McLeod in the lineup for the back-to-back with Boston and Buffalo on the weekend. Derek Ryan has been off his game for a few matches lately and Kyle Turris hasn’t played center going back well into last season.

OILERS NOTES: No banner-raising ceremony for Hall of Famer Ken Holland heading back to Detroit
  • Former Red Wings general manager Ken Holland makes his first trip back to Detroit Tuesday night as a minted Hockey Hall of Famer but the current Edmonton Oilers GM won’t be getting his banner raised as a salute… It’s a ‘players only’ club in Detroit.
  • Devin Shore, who had moved up to the 3C hole between Zack Kassian and Warren Foegele, might be out until just before Christmas with a lower-body issue. It’s not the ankle he twisted and missed the first two league games. Might be a knee after he was hurt in period two against the Rangers Friday.
  • Expect Ryan McLeod to be summoned from Bakersfield for the five-game road trip. McLeod has five points in seven games on the farm, and his speed and ability to transport the puck is a plus. The coaching staff wants him to get more involved physically, using his big body along the boards, also going to the net harder.
  • If you go back to the last month of last season, Connor McDavid has points in 18 straight league games (43 points). It’s 10 games and counting this season.
  • Leon Draisaitl is plus-41 in the past 66 games, going back to last year.
  • Zack Kassian was on the second line right-wing spot in place of Kailer Yamamoto in practice, with Tippett maybe looking for a book-end, bigger grind guy to partner LW Zach Hyman, with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins in the middle.
  • Yamamoto would be playing with Spokane buddy Ryan (they kill penalties together) and Foegele on a third line in Detroit.
  • Brendan Perlini was an extra on the fourth line at practice Sunday with Kyle Turris and Tyler Benson on the wings and Colton Sceviour at centre but McLeod might take Sceviour’s spot in Detroit.

BLH’s Thoughts: I don’t think that 150pts or more is out of the question with Connor this year and to that end, Leon Draisaitl probably won’t be far behind.

I’m excited to see if Killer will be a line driver on the third line against Detroit and how long Kassian’s leash will be on the 2nd line…

The Red Wings have to elite rookies in Lucas Raymond and Mortiz Seider that are lighting it up this year so far and Detroit’s offense is running right through those two. Shut them down and you’ll turn off the Red Wings offense.

  • Arthur Staple of The Athletic: The New York Rangers have had some issues with the bottom part of their defensive group. Although it’s still early, they may need to keep their eye on the depth defenseman trade market… Two options on struggling teams could be pending UFA defensemen Ben Chiarot (Canadiens) and Calvin de Haan (Blackhawks).
  • Michael Traikos of the Toronto Sun: The Toronto Maple Leafs should have extended goaltender Jack Campbell last offseason before they named him their starter and before he put himself on Team USA’s radar for the Olympics.
  • NHL Watcher: Darren Dreger on TSN 1050 on Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Travis Dermott and Justin Holl: To move out one of those guys and this stage of the season, I think a team that is inquiring or is acquiring is going to have to overpay for either player”.
  • Haily Salvian of The Athletic: (mailbag) The Calgary Flames have over $31 million in projected salary cap space but that number could shrink quickly with extensions for Johnny GaudreauMatthew Tkachuk and Andrew Mangiapane.
  • TSN: Pierre LeBrun said the Carolina Hurricanes didn’t like what the Sabres were after for Eichel… Arizona tried several times to get in on this trade. Not to get Jack Eichel of course, but to be a third team to help with the salary cap implications like they’ve done in the past in order to get a draft pick.
