DYLAN HOLLOWAY
  • The young man was impressive in his pro debut, two assists and some great looks throughout the game. His shot, one of the key questions after two surgeries, looked fine to me, one of them glanced wide but had some torque. He had four shots on goal, one assist came on the power play, the other at evens.
  • He’s going to be very good. He’s not going to be in the AHL long.

BLH’s Thoughts: They say the players are first to know and word has it, the players approve of Mr. Holloway.

I will say this though, he’s running on adrenaline right now and his playing history suggests that in his first year at a new level of hockey, there’s a transition period that needs to take place before he starts to flourish statistically. So, not to sound pessimistic about the young man, but I’m sort of waiting for that to take place before he gets recalled or else we might be seeing it at the NHL level and I shudder to think what will be said if he gets out of the gate slowly as most of the fanbase isn’t aware of his playing history.

Cult of Hockey

One way to relieve the Edmonton Oilers pressure cooker is to turn down the heat a little: 9 Things
  • Jesse Puljujarvi didn’t register a point against Calgary. But he played a key role in 3 goals for, a better door than a window on the 2 power play goals and as a noisy decoy on the game winner.
  • Dylan Holloway made his debut in Bakersfield Saturday and his pretty outlet pass to James Hamblin was his first professional point. He added another later. I wonder how long Holloway will be down there? Not long, methinks.
  • There is nothing great about 19-16-2. But Saturday’s win over Calgary didn’t just stop the bleeding. It closed the gap with the Flames in a proverbial 4-point game… The tough road to the post-season will be paved by their performance within their division (Edmonton is 9-2 so far).
  • … the performance of Evan Bouchard Saturday suggests to me that going with Bouchard and Tyson Barrie is a stronger option, not only because of their offensive gifts. But it preserves Nurse’s TOI for 5v5 and the PK, areas where Darnell can make a bigger impact than those 2 other guys.
  • …There is likely a reluctance in the Oilers organization to pay the high price demanded for an impact goaltender. I would also be nervous to spend a high-end asset for a rental. You’d need term, but that also comes at a price.
  • A decision on Evander Kane in Edmonton is close. Look…nothing is ever done until it’s done… I think Edmonton is the furthest along in the process of anyone else…and that a decision is leaning closer to a “when” for the Oilers than merely “if”. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if Evander Kane’s equipment bag was already sitting in Edmonton somewhere.
  • …I suggest that we all take our lead from Bell Let’s Talk and turn down the thermostat just a bit. And by that, I mean fans, reporters and players. It’s a tough time in this old world. By all means…cheer hard. Report hard. Play hard. But try to take a deep breath before it extends past that.

BLH’s Thoughts: My favorite time of the year when journos and bloggers can hide behind #BellLetsTalk and pretend they didn’t shit all over a player or players who are employed by the hockey team they cover.

Let’s drop the “Bell” from that hashtag, why don’t we? There’s no way a telecommunications corporation should be corporatizing mental health.

Spector’s Hockey

  • SPORTSNET: Jeff Marek reports the Arizona Coyotes have received an offer of a young player, a prospect and a first-round pick for defenseman Jakob Chychrun… Marek believes the Panthers are the team to watch in this bidding for Chychrun. He also said the Rangers offered up a package that included winger Vitali Kravtsov.
  • Jeff Marek reports the Rangers have also inquired about Jake DeBrusk. The Boston Bruins winger requested a trade in late November.
  • SPORTSNET: Elliotte Friedman reports there still isn’t clarity if the NHL will add any penalty to Evander Kane over his alleged breaking of AHL COVID protocols during his tenure with the San Jose Sharks farm team.
  • Friedman also said the Edmonton Oilers checked into the cost of acquiring a goaltender. Money will have to go out to make the dollars fit for the cap-strapped Oilers. He believes if the Oilers could’ve done something where they gave up a late-round pick they would’ve done it. However, they’re not keen to part with their first, second, or third-rounder in this year’s draft.
