5 Defensemen to Target via Trade

  • Ben Chiarot (MTL) – He would provide the oilers a significant upgrade to the team’s bottom pair or could even bump Keith down in the lineup. He is a regular penalty killer for the Canadiens and could help the Oilers in that department while averaging over 23 minutes of ice time so far this season.
  • Nick Leddy (DET) – He is a pure shutdown player who will provide a big boost to the penalty kill, and can be relied on late in a game to close it out. His experience in the playoffs and familiarity with former teammate and current Oiler Duncan Keith could provide much-needed stability on a volatile Oilers blueline.
  • Robert Hagg (BUF) – Hagg is a physical defenseman who is not afraid to throw the body, which is something the Oilers are missing on their blueline since Adam Larsson’s departure. Hagg ranks within the league’s top 150 players in hits, and in the top 50 in blocked shots with 73 in both categories, and could help take the defensive load off of some of the Oilers’ minute-eating defensemen.
  • Scott Mayfield (NYI) – Mayfield fits both the play style and cap situation the Oilers are looking for as a defensive defenseman with a low cap hit and term remaining on his current contract. Although he plays the right side, a move like this could allow the team to explore the option of moving Barrie to create cap space heading into next season.
  • Carson Soucy (SEA) – His 6’5″ frame would provide the Oilers with a big body on their backend who is mobile and can defend well for his size… Through 141 games at the NHL level, Soucy owns a plus-43 rating, proving he makes a positive impact from the backend when he is on the ice.

BLH’s Thoughts: Nick Leddy would be such a Holland target. Edmonton picking up a veteran like that would not shock me in the least.

Robert Hagg is a guy I know the Oilers have been watching since the Chiarelli days. If I’m not mistaken, I think the Flyers were offering him up in a deal for Puljujarvi when Jess was playing with Karpat. So, perhaps the interest is still there.

However, if you’re a regular reader, you know exactly who I want the Oilers to trade for out of this group…

Cult of Hockey

Top Edmonton Oilers winger out for a month. What does it mean for team?

  • Just when when Puljujarvi was getting his best game back on track after slump a bit in terms of offensive production as he came back from COVID, he’s out for a month.
  • Dylan Holloway has now played 11 games in Bakersfield, with five points. Is it possible that Puljujarvi’s injury will accelerate his call up to the Oilers? Is he ready?
  • On the power play, Puljujarvi won’t be missed quite as much. He’s likely the best screener of he goalie, but Hyman also does that work and Kane has a bit more shooting and passing skill in the low post.
  • Ryan McLeod was moved up to play with Leon Draisaitl and Evander Kane after Puljujarvi got hurt…
  • The Oil’s strong depth at forward with the additions of Hyman, Kane, Foegele and Derek Ryan should put them in a decent spot to cope with the absence of Puljujarvi…

BLH’s Thoughts: Holloway’s gone ice cold since his hot start to his year and I’m not one to pat myself on the back, but I wrote here so many times that Holloway’s always needed a year or so to get acclimated to a new level of hockey. It goes way back to his minor hockey years in Calgary. So, knowing that, we need to temper expectations with this player. In fact, I’d rather call up Rafa Lavoie, who is actually looking like an NHL player, and give him a cup of coffee with one of Edmonton’s top centers because he might have the best release in the organization right now.

Brendan Perlini hasn’t played since Jay Woodcroft took over, with Jess out, maybe they should consider throwing him in and seeing what he’s got…

As for Cloudy, he looked fantastic on Leon’s wing. I really want to see that relationship get fostered for another week or two.

In all honesty, one of the main reasons I watch the Oilers is for Puljujarvi. McDavid and Draisaitl are awesome and all, but once you’ve watched them play for seven years, you kinda know what’s going on there. I’m still waiting for Jesse to truly break out and every year he plays, he takes another step in his development, so there’s always something new to watch out for with him. Or at least that’s how I feel.

Oilersnation

Players from Frank Seravalli’s February Trade Targets list who might interest the Oilers

  • Brandon Hagel (CHI) – a 23-year-old winger in Chicago who does a little bit of everything. Hagel plays a sound two-way game, kills penalties, and has 14 goals and 27 points through 44 games.
  • Nick Paul (OTT) – Paul can play both centre and the wing, he has a gritty, hard-working style of play, and he can chip in a little bit offensively, as he has nine goals through 46 games this season.
  • Alexandr Georgiev (NYR) – “The Rangers are believed to be open to moving him if they can find another veteran that they’d be comfortable with as an insurance policy on Vezina candidate Igor Shesterkin.” – Seravalli

BLH’s Thoughts: Hagel’s getting likened to Barclay Goodrow by Bob Stauffer (Oilers Now, 630CHED) and as much as I’d like that kind of player on the Oilers, they’re not quite in the same position as a team like Tampa or Colorado to be able to throw away a first rounder and a prospect for a high-end 3rd liner like that.

Paul is an interesting option though. I really think the Sens want to keep him and he’d like to stay, but man, he’s a big boy with great hands, a ripper of a shot, he can skate well, and he doesn’t shy away from the muck. He’s not Tom Wilson or anything, but as far as depth forwards go, Nick Paul is an excellent one of those.

I think Oilers fans hear that the Rangers would be willing to deal Georgiev if they can get a veteran backup for Shesterkin and they immediately think that guy is Mikko Koskinen. Sorry folks, Mikko’s not that guy. The Rangers are talking about a Braden Holtby or a MA Fleury… Somebody with a tad more pedigree than Koski. I do wonder if they’d consider Jaro Halak though…
