Could Jake DeBrusk’s new contract facilitate a trade to the Edmonton Oilers?
  • This year with the Bruins he’s been producing well. He’s appeared in 57 games scoring 15 goals and 26 points. With him on the ice at 5×5 this year, the Bruins have controlled 52.13 percent of the shot attempts, 45.10 percent of the goals scored and 54.16 percent of the expected goal share. His PDO of 97.5 suggests he could expect even better results as his on-ice shooting percentage of 5.64 is around three percent below average.
  • According to hockeyviz.com, his even-strength isolated impacts come largely in the offensive zone. DeBrusk provides offence at an eight percent rate above league average generating lots of shots from in tight, while he contributes defence at a four percent rate below league average.

BLH’s Thoughts: Did anybody catch Bob Stauffer saying there were agents looking at what Evander Kane is doing alongside McDavid and Draisaitl and telling him that they have a client who could do that. Stauffer said that maybe this was a player who needed a change of scenery… Reckon he was talking about Louie’s boy? You know Jake shares the same agent as Nugent-Hopkins, right?

As it stands, Evander Kane is scoring at a 40 goal pace in 25 games here and he’s the only pure sniper on the team. If he were smart he would accept whatever deal Ken Holland gave him and continued to cash in because there aren’t any other teams who possess a Connor McDavid and a Leon Draisaitl for him to play with, therefore he’s not going to get great offers and opportunities. I wonder if a deal similar to Mike Hoffman’s would be fair considering he’s heading into his 30s.

Now, how does Evander Kane relate to Jake DeBrusk? Well, if Kane decided to take his chances on the market, Edmonton would need a replacement and in a perfect world that player would be Dylan Holloway, but I don’t think Ken Holland is in a hurry to rush him to Edmonton.

So, could the Oilers make a deal and deal Warren Foegele for DeBrusk? Just a straight swap depending on how each player does his spring during the playoff.

I just see DeBrusk as more of a sniper than Foegele and I think that Holland could find a cheaper physical third line winger who can skate well and help on the PK on the open market this summer. Maybe that’s Nic Deslauriers, Tyler Motte, Ryan Carpenter, Vinnie Hinostroza, Zach Aston-Reece, or Mackenzie MacEachern.

How would you feel about a deal like that? Do you think it would impact the re-signings of Jesse Puljujarvi, Kailer Yamamoto, and Ryan McLeod?

The Athletic

7 Condors who could impact Oilers’ fortunes in the playoffs
  • Edmonton’s NHL roster is strong, with names like Malone, Perlini and even Griffith possibly helping out during a long playoff run.
  • Skinner is in prime position to be the hero if things get dicey in the Oilers net.
  • Philip Broberg, Dmitri Samorukov and Markus Niemelainen are all quality prospects, with Broberg and Niemelainen getting significant NHL time this season.
  • The one exception is Dylan Holloway, who has yet to appear in an NHL game and missed the first half of the season. His offensive output and outscoring numbers are not screaming NHL recall.

BLH’s Thoughts: I don’t see any of the Condors from this year’s roster being able to impact Edmonton’s playoff fortunes alone unless the hockey gods decided to send more of the Oilers’ key guys to the IR. If everyone is healthy, none of the names above would get enough TOI to do it now that Ken Holland went out and acquired veterans Brett Kulak and Derrick Brassard. And yes, I know that this post was written before the deadline had passed but everybody knew what Holland was going to do with regards to his roster.

That said, next season the Condors will have some options in Carter Savoie, Xavier Bourgault, Ty Tullio, plus older prospects like Rafa Lavoie (I heard he’s gone cold again…), James Hamblin, Dylan Holloway, Philip Broberg, etc.

Trade Rumors

  • Spector’sHockeyPierre LeBrun reports DeBrusk’s agent was disappointed his client wasn’t moved before the deadline.
    •  Aaron Portzline reports Columbus Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen suggested bigger moves could be in store for his club in the offseason compared to their limited activity at the trade deadline. He indicated he’ll be in the market for a player who can have an impact right away.
    • Patrick Johnston also took note of Miller, Garland and winger Brock Boeser staying put despite weeks of trade conjecture. He speculates high-profile trades could still take place in the offseason, even if the leverage for those players won’t be as high as it was this past weekend.
  • NHLRumors.comEdmonton Oilers GM Ken Holland said that he spoke with Josh Archibald‘s agent before Monday’s trade deadline about moving Archibald to an American-based team… There wasn’t much market for him and teams were asking the Oilers to include a sweetener to take on the $1.5 million contract.
    • The Canadiens had talked to the Arizona Coyotes about Shea Weber‘s contract.
    • The Los Angeles Kings and Boston Bruins showed interest in Coyotes Jakob Chychrun but the Coyotes didn’t get an offer big enough.
    • Phil Kessel‘s $6.8 million cap hit and his iron man streak deterred some teams.
    • The Flames were also in on Ben Chiarot and Hampus Lindholm.

BLH’s Thoughts: I’d heard that Archie was on the move on Monday but I never really felt like it would go through. His teammates like him and he possesses a tool box that the Oilers really need when it’s available. Plus they’ve got a plan to use Brad Malone when Edmonton goes to the US if need be.

I’ve got a feeling this summer is going to be a fun one for hockey fans. Lots of player movement and I’m lead to believe the Oilers won’t be wallflowers either. They’re going to need to open up some salary to get the kids re-signed and there’s also Kulak and Kane to consider, plus Holland really needs to get that goaltending position sorted.
