2022/23 Battle of Alberta Pt.1
Three Players to Watch for Edmonton
- #56 Kailer Yamamoto – Woody’s got Killer alongside Kane and Leon and I’m worried that line is going to get caved in possession-wise and against this Calgary team, possession is going to be key. It’s going to be a physical game and if Yamo’s coming off an “upper body” ailment, I really don’t know if bringing him in against a hard-hitting club like the Flames will benefit the team. However, he’s got the moves to make those barbarians look silly too.
- #37 Warren Foegele – He’s going to need to be the assertive wrecking ball we saw glimpses of against the preseason’s AHL opposition. He’s got quick hands and a really nice release on his shot but the puck doesn’t always stick to his blade. I think he could be useful addition to the third line if he can mute some of Calgary’s attack with his big body and speed.
- #25 Darnell Nurse – Edmonton’s going to need Darnell to have that snarl but not so much that it lands him in the penalty box. I mean, that goes for the rest of the club’s leadership group too though. Stay. Out. of. The. Box!!!
Three Players to Watch for Calgary
- #10 Jonathan Huberdeau – This guy’s a full on superstar. More so than Gaudreau or Tkachuk were and you’d like to think he’s a soft playmaking winger because he puts up so many assists every year but this guy has got some real grit to his game. He goes to the paint and he gets in the muck. Seeing him in that #10 jersey makes me think of Gary Roberts, although, they’re not the same player by any stretch of the imagination.
- #91 Nazem Kadri – No doubt, Kadri will be tasked with slowing down Connor McDavid and that battle is probably worth the price of admission alone. No Tkachuk, no problem. Brad Treliving simply bought up the 2nd most aggravating forward in the entire league. I wonder if he has a meeting or two with Evander Kane?
- #25 Jacob Markstrom – Do the Oilers really have Markstrom’s number? He was feeling awfully Ron Hextall-like in their game against Colorado the other night. Reckon he’ll feel the same against Edmonton? I’d love to see him try it with Kane. Either way, he’ll have some Oiler forward’s fat ass in his face all night long. Rectum? Damn near killed him!

BLH’s Thoughts: I will be curious to see how Weegar performs too. I’m not on that bandwagon that sees him as one of the league’s elite defenders but I’m open to be wrong on that front as well.
This game has the potential to be full of fireworks seeing as it’s the first BOA of the year and it’s on Hockey Night in Canada, but every time I think we’re going to see a good ol’ fashioned BOA, I get disappointed… That said, these two teams are way better skill-wise. They’re both deep and Cup contenders and I’m betting we’ll be entertained nevertheless.
Trade Rumors
Spector’s Hockey
- THE ATHLETIC:In his recent bold predictions for 2022-23 for the Edmonton Oilers, Daniel Nugent-Bowman believes they’ll make a splash at the March 3 trade deadline. He claims they have had varying degrees of interest in Chicago Blackhawks winger Patrick Kane and Arizona Coyotes defenseman Jakob Chychrun.
The Daily Goal Horn
- Elliotte Friedman addressed where he believes Kane will land on his latest 32 Thoughts Podcast.
- “Until proven otherwise I thing the Rangers are the most likely destination,” Elliotte Friedman said. “Although there’s a lot of variables. We’ve said for months that Kane is going to sit around and see he’s good. If the Rangers are good I can see them being the team.”

BLH’s Thoughts: There’s really not much to say. I think Chychrun will ultimately head to LA, Patrick Kane to the Rangers, and new addition to the Oilers rumor mill, Jonathan Toews, will end up in Colorado.
My guess is that Edmonton will go for Klingberg and they’ll add some minor additions to their bottom six. Vets as usual. Perhaps Tyson Barrie gets moved out East. I think there’s some interest in Montreal’s Jake Evans.
Of course, all of this could change, I mean we’re talking about deadline acquisitions and the team hasn’t even played their second game.
