Three more names are quietly finding their way into the Edmonton Oilers rumor market. A versatile two-way defenseman that the Oilers were seriously looking at last year at the deadline. A potential 1b goaltender that’s had his name connecting to Edmonton previously, as well as a heavy 4th line center who a lot of people have glossed over. Read on to find out who!

The Latest Edmonton Oilers Trade Rumors
“One name they have recently been linked to is Ottawa Senators’ defenceman Jakob Chychrun. The Oilers have been strong defensively since Kris Knoblauch joined the team as the new head coach and show no signs of slowing down. If they look to add a big name to bolster their depth heading into the postseason, it wouldn’t be shocking to see them take a swing at Chychrun.” – The Hockey Writers
- I didn’t expect to see this name in the Oilers rumor mill again but here we are. Chychrun, as far as I know, can play both sides of the ice and that would have to mean that Cody Ceci and probably Philip Broberg would be heading to Ottawa.
- I think Ceci would be an upgrade over Bernard-Docker and Erik Brannstrom hasn’t had the best of times with the Sens. He’s an RFA this summer and I’m thinking that Ottawa could deal him at the deadline or walk away and that’d open up a spot for Broberg.
- That said, I don’t know what the Senators want to do with big left-shot prospect Tyler Kleven and they’ve still got Travis Hamonic on the books… But for that club, would it hurt to have Ceci, Zub, and Hamonic down the right side with Chabot, Sanderson, and Broberg down the left?
“New reports say that Juuse Saros might be available out of Nashville for the right price. Meanwhile, the Minnesota Wild might be open to moving Marc-Andre Fleury if they find themselves out of the playoff mix. Even Mackenzie Blackwood out of San Jose potentially makes more sense for the Oilers. The point is, GM Ken Holland will have choices.” – NHL Trade Talk
- “Picks and Skins” (as Jeff Jackson likes to call them) are both playing fantastically at the moment. I think PIckard’s running a .921 sv% during this heater and Skinner’s got one that’s over .930… They’re probably not touching the netminding unless it goes off the rails. Plus they’ve got Olie Rodrigue and Jack Campbell playing almost as good in Bakersfield. The internal options make this decision a little easier for Holland and Jackson.
- I know I recently tossed out a proposal I saw on the NHL network that had the Oilers sending Philip Broberg to Minnesota for MAF (50% retained) and 99% of the folks that took the time to reply said now. Funny enough, all three analysts (Mike Rupp, Mike Barnett I think, and Kevin Weekes) all said yes to the deal.
“Nic Dowd is one of the best defensive bottom six guys in the league. The Alabama native is signed for another year at a nice $1.3M cap hit. Dowd, however, appears to be moreso of an elite 4C than a true 3C. As well, Derek Ryan is pretty similar in comparison and makes $400k less. Therefore, I don’t think Dowd would be a wise option at the deadline unless we have no other choice. The acquisition cost would be a third round pick or so.” – The Oilers Rig
- I know the Rig had some fancy stats charts up that didn’t exactly show Dowd good offensively, but they did show him well defensively. Very well and for me, that’s who you’d like on your 4th line. It’s not out there to stack up the offense, it’s out there to keep the puck out of the net and eat the clock so that their team’s stars can rest up and get back out there.
- Dowd for me is a good trade target. I reckon he’s a better option than Derek Ryan for 4C on this team.
