- On yesterday’s show, Bob was talking to Rob Brown and they were discussing what the Oilers are lacking and the conclusion was that the defense is lacking a Josh Manson type and the 4th line lacks energy.
- Stauffer asked Brown if he’d be willing to move Broberg or Bouchard plus Puljujarvi in order to obtain a $4M defenseman that’s better right now and more experienced and the former Pens winger emphatically said yes, as long as the guy coming in brings nastiness and physicality.

- Stauffer felt that there’s a total lack of depth at forward but Rob Brown made an astute point that when you’ve got players like McDavid, Draisaitl, and Nurse making what they do, there’s only so much money left over to fill the rest of the line up.
- BLH’s Thoughts: So when that’s the case, you’re basically gambling on those depth players that they’ll outperform their contracts. Your 4th line, 3rd pair on D, and maybe one of your goalies are going to be on a league minimum (or upwards of just over a million dollars), ELC contracts, or two-way deals. Therefor, my feeling is that expectations should be extremely low with those players with regards to scoring.
- Elliotte Friedman brought up John Klingberg… Again. However, he also said that he doesn’t think the Oilers are in on Jakob Chychrun.
BLH’s Thoughts: Craig Button is right, a HEALTHY Jakob Chychrun is exactly what the Oilers need but therein lies the rub. Can the Coyotes defenseman be trusted to stay healthy? Button said that whoever is attempting to acquire Chychrun will need to do their due diligence and figure out why is he getting these injuries. Is he putting himself in poor positions? Is he being overused?
Let’s say Holland deals Bouchard and Puljujarvi, I think the Oilers would be doing themselves a massive disservice if they dealt TWO players who are regular contributors to their team right now for a single defenseman. That isn’t what’s going to aid Edmonton’s troubles right now and in fact, it might set the team back further seeing as they don’t have a replacement for Puljujarvi or Bouchard on the right side of this club’s roster.
If they’re dealing Puljujarvi and Broberg, there’s a world where that makes a little more sense because the blueline actually gets stronger but the forward depth takes a hit as it would lose another skater who can play in the top-six. He might not be producing at the moment, but he’s sure as hell not hurting the team when he’s out there and he’s leading the team’s forwards in hits while Kane is out.
I don’t know. I think they’ve just got to work themselves out of this funk. The Oilers aren’t in a great cap position and while they could deal some of the kids in Bakersfield, would that be a good use of assets. The players that have value they need and the ones they want to use to trade with, their worth isn’t as high as the organization would like… Holland is really in a dog shit position in terms of making a trade. All the GMs know what he needs and they’re not going to through him a life jacket. He’s also stated recently that there’s no big deal coming that would save the team.
Do you really think that the young players who are having terrible years so far statistically will continue to do so for another 60 games? Maybe it would make more sense just to ride this funk out and tinker.
As it stands though, you’ve got Gregor and Stauffer, the two biggest sports radio personalities in Edmonton bringing Chychrun’s name up with their guests. Is that because the writing is on the wall or just a coincidence?

Who to Keep an Eye on for New York
- #23 Adam Fox – Could be this generation’s Brian Leetch. He’s so good with the puck and one of the smartest dmen in the league. His team scores more goals when he’s on the ice and gets scored on more when he isnt’. He’s what a $9M defenseman looks like in this day and age.
- #93 Mika Zibanejad – New York’s main man. He’s producing at a point-per-game pace in his last five games.
- #10 Artemi Panarin – Hasn’t scored a goal in at least ten games but he’s got seven assists. If he’s looking to snap a drought, there’s no better team than the Oilers to aid him in that regard.
Who to Keep an Eye on for Edmonton
- #86 Philip Broberg – Klefbom 2.0 is back and let’s hope he’s what the doctor ordered. Aside from his obvious skating ability and puck transporting talents, he will sacrifice his body for his team and Lord knows this team could use a bit more selflessness from their dmen.
- #97 Connor McDavid – I think there’s a possibility that Connor and Leon get reunited on the same line tonight. In addition to that, I’m of the belief that he’s getting very frustrated and when that happens, look out! He hits more, gets in the muck more, and embarrasses his opponents more.
- #93 Ryan Nugent-Hopkins – Has the most points of any Oiler in his last five games (2g/3a), and he’s got a history of scoring against the Rangers (16gp 6g 10a). If he’s got his own line tonight, he’ll have his work cut out for him. Maybe he’ll be blessed with Zach Hyman on his wing and they’ll be one of the more entertaining lines to watch.
BLH’s Thoughts: New York’s 4-4-2 in their last ten but make no bones about it. This team is deep and they’ve got an emerging superstar guarding their net. I really don’t like Edmonton’s chances against the Rangers if you line these two rosters up back to back. I mean, they’ve got Lafreniere, Chytil, and Kakko on their third line! They’re not scoring much recently, but still! Gerrard Gallant will have one of K’Andre Miller, Adam Fox, or Braden Schneider on the ice at all times and we’re not even mentioning Jacob Trouba and Ryan Lindgren who are out there to simply make opposing forwards’ lives a living hell. Panarin and Kreider can’t be forgotten either.
Look, for the Oilers to win, either the Rangers play a terrible game or Connor McDavid goes Supernova. Otherwise, Edmonton goes home with ZERO points on this roadie.
