The Athletic
How the cap impacts Bouchard, Kostin, Yamamoto, Bjugstad and more
- “Holland said Tuesday that he might not qualify Kostin ahead of Friday’s 3 p.m. MT deadline. Not doing so would make Kostin a UFA.”
- “…it sounds like Holland is exploring the trade market for Kostin before Friday’s deadline…”
- “Kostin not being on the roster could allow the Oilers to give more money to Bouchard.”
- “There’s mutual interest in Janmark returning. If that happens, it would likely also be at a discount compared to this past season.”
- “The word is that Bjugstad, 30, is seeking around $2 million, which isn’t an unfair ask considering he scored 17 goals and was solid defensively while making $900,000 this past season.”
BLH’s Thoughts: DNB could’ve saved everybody a lot of trouble and simple posted “Anybody coming to or re-signing in Edmonton will need to take less.”…
Holland could simply pay someone to take Jack Campbell of his hands and open that cap space right up. Then he could have the money to sign Bjugstad and Kostin. Not even the ficklest of fans in Edmonton would complain about either of those two making $2M/yr.
Today is going to be an interesting day league-wide. How many trades do you think Holland makes today? I’m going to predict he does at least two deals and as many as four if things break their way.
Oilers Now via The Cult of Hockey
- “On Oilers Now, Stauffer stressed that Brown would have lots of options on the unrestricted free agent market, probably with term. “That might take him out of the mix in Edmonton, doesn’t it?” he asked Frank Seravalli, as sober and hard-headed an NHL insider as they come.”
- “I don’t want to say it’s totally going to take him out of the mix,” Seravalli said. “But the easiest way I can explain it is this. If Connor Brown is picking to come to the Edmonton Oilers, he’s going to be leaving a lot of money on the table. That’s the sense that the market place has brought, is a multi-year three or four years, three-to-four million dollar a year, that teams don’t seem to be afraid of the knee injury, they feel pretty confident about it. And Brown has been pretty confident about his recovery.”
- “Put yourself in his shoes, his situation. I’d have a hard time knowing that I’m one knee injury away from never playing again potentially, I’d have a hard time leaving $12 million on the table, or whatever the number might be, just for one year as magical as might be to play with Connor McDavid, and as much more money as it might make you. Sometimes the pull of that security is tough to overcome.”
BLH’s Thoughts: Exactly. This has to be what Brown’s agent is telling him. Why risk losing millions and millions of dollars for one underpaid season in Edmonton? If he suffers another catastrophic injury NHL GMs aren’t going to ignore that. I mean, even if that surgically repaired knee gets nicked up people are going to take note.
The best thing for Brown to do is to find the best team that’s offering him the most in term and dollar amount and sign it.
Now, when you here Stauffer softening his stance on a player after pumping his tires for months prior, I think that’s a good sign that the winds are changing directions.
Trade Rumors
Spector’s Hockey
- Pierre LeBrun reports the Toronto Maple Leafs have spoken to the San Jose Sharks about defenseman Erik Karlsson… The Seattle Kraken and Carolina Hurricanes are among a number of others who’ve expressed interest.
- Khan suggested DeBrincat as one option along with Philadelphia’s Travis Konecny. When it comes to the Senators winger, he believes Yzerman is unlikely to pull the trigger unless he can get an extension with the player first.
- Elliotte Friedman yesterday reported hearing that a trade involving Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck isn’t on the front burner right now.
- Ethan Sears believes the Islanders will attempt to move winger Josh Bailey in a cost-cutting trade.
- Matthew Fairburn reports the Buffalo Sabres are exploring a trade of winger Victor Olofsson.
Daily Faceoff
- Sources tell Daily Faceoff that the Canadiens are spending Wednesday’s lead-up to the Draft deliberating as many as five separate offers for the pick from teams looking to make a significant move up the board.
- Sources say the Canadiens have placed at least one call to the Sharks to inquire about swapping slots, but the belief is Sharks GM Mike Grier was unwavering in his desire to keep the pick.
- …the Flyers may also push to move up into the Top 5 from No. 7 overall so they can get their guy.
BLH’s Thoughts: Nashville is looking to shoot up to the top-5 as well. So keep an eye on the Pred today. I think it’s going to be really entertaining!
