Hall of Fame Debate, UFA Options, and More
  • “I’m hearing Tyler Bertuzzi will likely test the free agent market. Edmonton needs another top-six winger, but he likely will be too expensive, unless he is interested in a short-term deal and can cash in on a bigger deal next year when the cap goes up and he has a productive season playing with either Connor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl.”
  • “I was searching around players in Europe, and came across Marko Dano… Last season in the Czech elite league he popped with 29 goals and 51 points in 51 games. He turns 29 in November. He could be a candidate for a two-way deal for an NHL team. Maybe he’s a late developer. A two-way deal is low risk for an NHL team.”
  • “Another intriguing UFA is Tomas Tatar. Could Ken Holland convince him to sign a one-year deal? Tatar would be a solid complementary winger. He had 15 goals and 35 points at 5×5 with the Devils last season.”
  • “When looking at left wingers similar in size, who skate well, are physical and will have a low cap hit, one player who fits that bill is Adam Erne. He scored 8-10-18 in 61 games for Detroit. However, his possession numbers weren’t great.”

BLH’s Thoughts: I think there’s a less than zero chance that Bertuzzi signs in Edmonton but you never know, he does share an agent with Zach Hyman and Devin Shore… Besides, Connor Brown has already signed in Edmonton, right? Hyman and Hyman-lite will be rocking the top two RW spots in 23/24! It probably would’ve helped the Oiler’s chances if Bertuzzi had played with Hyman in Michigan.

As for the bottom six RW spots, Derek Ryan has one all but sewn up and Rafa Lavoie will be given a shot for the other. I suppose that means there’s room for one more? I wouldn’t go near Dano because he’s already shown he’s not NHL caliber but Tatar I’d have time for but I’m not sure if Holland would. Erne would be fun to watch as he’s kind of like Josh Archibald.

Seravalli: The Edmonton Oilers won’t be Connor Brown’s only offer
  • Connor Brown is going to have a lot of intriguing options. It’s really going to come down to him and how he’s feeling knee and his confidence with it holding up. If he’s going to the Oilers my guess is that he will be giving up some term and dollars. I think the offers might be pretty juicy elsewhere.”

BLH’s Thoughts: I’m going to give my buddy, Dash, over at the Heavy Hockey Network the benefit of the doubt here as he’s been the first to go public saying Brown has basically signed in Edmonton and he’s wanted to be there for a while now, but there’s always that annoying voice in the back of my head telling me that Brown is going to make way more going to another team like Colorado, Vegas, Buffalo, NJ, Detroit, or Carolina and have just as good of a chance at winning a Stanley Cup.

Trade Rumors

Spector’s Hockey
  • Friedman believes the Philadelphia Flyers are prepared to do a lot of things. He said a couple of teams told him they believe the Flyers will have one more first-round pick than they already have.
  • Michael Gallagher, meanwhile, focused on whether Pierre-Luc Dubois might be on the Predators’ radar. The 24-year-old Winnipeg Jets center is a restricted free agent and multiple reports suggest he’s on the trade block.
  • Darren Dreger reports the Winnipeg Jets are getting some trade interest in Blake Wheeler… Dreger also indicates they could buy him before the end of the current buyout period on June 30 if unable to trade him before then.
  • Friedman said Bruins GM Don Sweeney is burning up the phone lines trying to make a cost-cutting move to free up enough cap space for Bertuzzi and Hathaway. Bruins such as Linus UllmarkTaylor HallMatt Grzelcyk and Derek Forbort are being bandied about in the rumor mill.

BLH’s Thoughts: How do you think Taylor Hall feels right now? He must’ve thought when he signed with Boston that he’d be sorted for the duration or at least 75% of that contract and now there are rumors that Sweeney is offering him around the league for a song… That guy… If he didn’t have this much bad luck he’d have none at all. Watch Stevie Y swoop in and steal him or the Avs.

As I’ve said before, I’ve got time for Blake Wheeler. He’s 37 years old and still putting up 50pt seasons on a shitty Jets team. I can only imagine what he’d do in Edmonton.

I know there’s lots of smoke tying Yamamoto to Chicago but I wonder about him going to Philly in a deal for Scott Laughton. Would you be comfortable sending Yamo and McLeod for Laughton?
