Before getting into this post I always try to preface them by saying that anything can happen between the time I get a message from my source and the time I post it. Things change all of the time and I’m happy if I get one or two of these rumors from my sources right every season because that’s about the going success rate.
So don’t bet your farm on what you’re about to read but take it was water cooler banter and entertainment, as it should be taken.
I’ve been told that the Oilers have some interest in Finnish defender Olli Maatta out of Pittsburgh.
Maatta has been in Penguins coach Mike Sullivan’s doghouse this year. To my knowledge, he’s been a healthy scratch once already and I guess there’s a possibility that Maatta could be moved but with the injury to Justin Schultz, personally, I can’t see it but I’m not the GM nor is my ego big enough to believe I could do a better job than the current one.
I’m pretty certain that the Oilers wouldn’t be able to make a deal to acquire Maatta unless they felt like digging into that LTIR money from Sekera. So IF they did trade for him, some salary would need to be going back Pittsburgh’s way as well as a defenceman to replace Maatta.
And one other thing, how many left-handed defenders do the Oilers need?
