Oilers Should Pursue Blackhawks’ Dylan Strome as a Trade Target
- The short-lived Dylan Strome experiment as a member of the Chicago Blackhawks seems to be nearing its end. Strome appears to have fallen out of favour with the coaches, as well as out of the lineup from the very start of the season.
- With two 5-on-5 goals in three games, there is cause for concern. Strome should be given a chance with his past success alone. But this may just be an indication that the Blackhawks are done with him and want to move on with the young talent they have coming up and already vying for spots.
- Just like the familiarity that Strome had as soon as he went over to the Blackhawks, he could have the same thing happen after being reacquainted with former linemate Connor McDavid. I don’t expect Strome to see top-6 minutes immediately if the Edmonton Oilers were able to pull off this trade, but there are similarities in the situation Ken Holland handled to perfection with Jesse Puljujarvi.
- A fair asking price would be a second-round pick.
- Any team trading for Strome would also get the rights to him after the season is over, as he is a restricted free agent.
- A trade for Strome could be deemed very valuable in finding a diamond in the rough and taking advantage of a team when their asset’s value is low.
BLH’s Thoughts: I wouldn’t be against the Oilers bringing in another Strome, especially the one that is BFFs with the greatest player in the world. Would I do it for a 2nd round pick? Tough call, but with teams like Ottawa also in the hunt and knowing they’ve got multiple 2nd rounders on hand, there’s not much of a chance to bend Stan Bowman over a barrel here.
Now, the question is, would Dylan Strome be okay with being a 4C considering that Derek Ryan is the 3C at the moment and doing a fine job of it?
I mean, ideally, you’d love to have Ryan and Kassian on your 4th line because your third line is so good, but I have to say, I’m really not sure what kind of player Strome is right now. He had 51pts in 28gp for Chicago three years ago, but his production has been trending down ever since…
At the end of the day, I think he’d be a better option than Ryan McLeod and he’s a player who seemingly has all the tools to be a good NHLer and he’ll also be able to grow with the team which is something I value. On the other hand, does he require being played with highly skilled linemates in order to produce?

That bad thing that Edmonton Oilers fans have feared? It just happened
- The Oilers have just announced that goalie Mike Smith has been placed on injured reserve, after leaving Monday night’s game with an injury. He will miss a minimum of one week. Stuart Skinner has been recalled from Bakersfield.
- Coach Dave Tippett had previously said Smith was day-to-day, so perhaps Smith will be back relatively soon. It’s also good news that Edmonton has just two games until next Wednesday. Maybe this injury to Smith is but a blip that will be forgotten ny Halloween.
- The Oilers must now rely on Mikko Koskinen, who has never looked great under a super heavy work load. He was a solid NHL goalie in 2019-20, but didn’t do well last year when Smith was out.
- Stuart Skinner has looked increasingly solid both in the AHL and in NHL pre-season games. This should allow Tippett to go with him now and then (if Smith is out longer than is now feared), though Tippett is known to like to stick with his most established veteran players, hence Smith starting the first three games in a row this season.
BLH’s Thoughts: It’s a small knock and the timing couldn’t be better considering where the Oilers are heading on their 2-game roadie plus Stu Skinner is taking off where he left last season.
With that said, is anybody else concerned that Dave Tippett will run Mikko Koskinen in back-to-back games instead of doing the smart thing and giving Skinner one of those starts? I am…
The Daily Goal Horn
- Pierre LeBrun noted that the Devils initiated talks with Jack Hughes and his agent Pat Brisson.
“In Jack Hughes’ case, I think the Devils, for sure, are probably saying let’s sign this young franchise player before he really pops this year. He’s not had that huge year yet, but you feel that it’s coming here. That’s why I think Pat Brisson and CAA are going to say what’s the hurry, for sure they’re going to get him signed but does it have to be right away, this could take a while.”
- Adam Fox new deal will have consequences…
“I’ve been told there’ve been very preliminary discussions, nothing serious in nature yet” he said. “The Rangers have spent a lot of their cap money. You think about Mika Zibanejad’s extension that starts next year at 8.5M, Panarin makes 11.6M, I think they overpaid for Barclay Goodrow. It’s not Adam Fox that’s going to pay the price for the New York Rangers cap issues moving forward.”
- The Flyers top center is likely heading to unrestricted free agency next season. According to GM Chuck Fletcher the two sides will not discuss a new deal until the end of the season.
- If Giroux decides to test the market, the Flyers will lose a key asset for nothing. If Philadelphia is on the outside looking in at the trade deadline, I even expect Giroux to be traded as a rental.
