Oilers Should Target Jack Campbell If Deal Deteriorates With Maple Leafs
- At the age of 30, Campbell is pretty much everything the Oilers need. Sure, he’s only played 95 NHL games, but that’s more than Koskinen had played when the Oilers extended him and Campbell has proven a lot more in his 95 games than Koskinen had.
- The way Campbell is playing this season, he’s earning early Vezina talk. He’s got a .932 save percentage so far this season and he’s 25-7-4 as a member of the Leafs’ roster since coming over in a trade from the Los Angeles Kings.
- Still relatively young for a goalie, Campbell is also the right age to move forward with this young Oilers core.
- …his stock is quickly starting to rise and the Leafs only have so much cap space to work with. Should Campbell realize (or his agent tell him) he could be a $5.5 – $6.5 million goalie on the open market with a five-six-year term attached to it, that’s a tough place for the Leafs to meet him.
- While the Oilers don’t have a ton of cap space either, they will have more room with Koskinen’s $4.5 million cap hit coming off the books, Kyle Turris’ $1.65 million going away, Josh Archibald not returning at $1.5 million, and Kris Russell’s $1.25 million deal set to expire.
BLH’s Thoughts: It’s early days. I wouldn’t take any goalie stats as gospel right now. I mean, there are 20 goalies with .920 sv percentages or higher at the moment (including BOTH Edmonton netminders).
If Campbell continues to perform well, he’s going to price himself out of Toronto, but will he also become too much for the Oilers?
Wouldn’t it make more sense for the Oilers to look under the radar a bit for their next guy?
Is that guy Chris Driedger out of Seattle? He’s three years younger than Campbell and over the past three seasons has a .930 save percentage and a 2.06 GAA plus the Kraken are committed to Philip Grubauer now.

9 Thoughts on 9 Games
- We all knew that McDavid and Draisaitl would be very productive but I’ll be honest, I didn’t see them starting the season like this…
- September was always the time when Oilers fans convince themselves that Mikko Koskinen is going to be better… Well, he’s been miles better than what I expected…
- I thought the Oilers powerplay could finish the year around 40%… They’re currently sitting at 46.4% through nine games… They might just keep producing at a historic clip…
- At even-strength, Hyman has been a great fit… Whether he is riding shotgun with McDavid or playing with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins on the second line, he’s been driving play, forechecking hard, and producing…
- The other big addition to the forward group was Warren Foegele… there’s no denying that Foegele was a perfect addition to the Oilers’ bottom six. He’s scored twice now and brought a really good mix of speed and size to their third line.
- He’s (Kassian) doing everything that made him the fan favourite back in 2017. The big hits have been there, the antics have been there, and the offence has been there.
- Ryan Nugent-Hopkins currently leads the NHL in assists with 13 but he hasn’t found the back of the net once this year.
- Bouchard has been confidently handling top-pairing minutes early in the season and that is damn impressive.
- If Holland does decide to move a big asset at the deadline for immediate help, I think he should go out and get a left-shot defenseman who can handle top-four minutes.
- The Oilers have now had four straight games where the announced crowd has been under 15,000 and they haven’t had a single sellout yet this season.
BLH’s Thoughts: The feeling I get is that the Oilers will look to bolster their bottom-six considering how much depth Holland added to his defense over the summer. I wonder if the Oilers will re-visit Ryan Getzlaf for an upgrade at 3C. In fact, the Ducks will have quite a few players on the trade market who would benefit Edmonton’s playoff chances. Rickard Rakell, Josh Manson, Hampus Lindholm, Jakob Silfverberg, and John Gibson are all candidates in my opinion.
