The Day After -4.0: Three things from the Oilers’ 2-1 win over the Flames
- McDavid, Draisaitl are still good
- Things got a bit wild in the third period with Darnell Nurse dropping the mitts twice, both with AHL’er Mitchell McLain.
I'd hope this is an everyday thing from Warren Foegele considering the guy he turned inside out was AHL winger and wannabe thug Mitchell McLain…
Sadly, McLovin' will be seeing actual NHL players this season and the likelihood of this happening again is close to zero… https://t.co/XND5f2iiFW

- If Foegele wants to stick around, he’s going to need to play just how he did last night every night.
- The Oilers’ third line was arguably their strongest of the night. At 5×5, the trio controlled 81.82 percent of the shot attempts, 100% of the expected goals (.64-0.0) and 100% of the scoring chances (5-0).
BLH’s Thoughts: “McDavid and Draisaitl are still good.” What?! Why would somebody write that?… NEWSFLASH!!! The two best centers in the league are still good! As if nobody knows that. Then you follow that headliner up with “Who’da thunk”… F*ck me… Is that what they teach at SAIT’s journalism department these days? I mean, could you imagine opening up a right proper newspaper and reading “Putin is still a psycho. Who’da thunk?” Seriously… That’s brutal.
Now, I read a lot of people saying that Nurse should stick to playing hockey and leave the fighting to somebody else but I disagree. Now that Darnell is taking up $9M of the salary cap and bringing home $12M in real money this year, he best be fighting, scoring, hitting, passing, blocking shots, and everything else on the “I’m a professional hockey player” checklist. What pisses me off is that he couldn’t even finish McLain in the first fight let alone the second. That AHL mug should’ve been going for repairs after the initial bout and not left thirsty for a second go…
There is a thought going around that Holland should grab a thug for the bottom six but I really don’t know if that’s going to help, to be honest. Either the team is going to play a very assertive physical game like Sutter teams do or they’re not. It’s a team-wide effort, not just something for some grocery stick on the 4th line.
Bob Stauffer says the teams enforcer is their PP (I’m pretty sure he stole that line from somebody in Edmonton’s front office as he tends to do) but the problem is, when that PP goes cold, the other team knows that and they ramp up the cheap shots and hit count and they run the Oilers right out of the game because Edmonton’s team is built solely around skill save for a couple of players. You watch when Jack Campbell or Stu Skinner gets run. Will that player pay for that bit of irresponsibility or will the Oilers be happy to come away with the man-advantage?
I don’t think it’s a huge achievement that Edmonton’s third line dominated last night. THEY PLAYED CALGARY’S AHL TEAM!!! For the most part, that is. They’d better dominate! Plus it’s preseason! Who the f*ck cares?!
You should’ve heard Cam Moon and Stauffer doing play-by-play last night. You could’ve sworn it was game seven of the Cup final with all the piss and vinegar they were putting into their call. And how many times did I have to hear about Luke Esposito’s AHL contract?… FRESH MATERIAL FFS!!!
That said, I do like listening to Mooner. Reminds me of Rod Phillips a bit. And I do like Bob’s color for the most part. I was just losing my shit having to hear about Esposito’s deal.
No doubt, you’re going to hear how good Yamo and McLovin’ played on the weekend and how poor Puljujarvi was. Which is fine because I can agree in this game vs. CGY that assessment is more true than not. It wasn’t ALL good or ALL bad for the three, but you could tell that Foegele had it going more than the other two.
#37 was hitting everything and using his speed and size to disrupt the Flames’ flow, Yamo made a great play to set up Leon and he was his usual water bug self, and Jesse’s game, to my eye, left me wanting to see more but as I’ve said time and time again; he’s a quiet assassin and the things that he does well that impact the game are often done silently and subtly.

BLH’s Thoughts: I don’t think it’s enough either. Plus there’s a salary cap to consider as well and the difference between JP and Chychrun’s deal is about $1.6M. To add to that, are you agreeing to send your best dman (disgruntled albeit) to Edmonton without getting a top-tier blueline prospect in the return package?
A top four of Nurse-Ceci, Chychrun-Bouchard, is a helluva lot better than Nurse-Ceci, Kulak-Bouchard if you ask me… Plus Kulak’s contracted for another three years I think and to top that off, Stauffer was saying that he think’s Broberg isn’t skating as well since he packed on the muscle and there are whispers that Phil’s puck movement isn’t great…
So, we’ll see. Me? I’d prefer Holland hang on to his big trade assets until after Christmas to see who shakes out. Patrick Kane will most definitely be a target for Holland and who knows what other players will land on his list?
