OILERS NOTES: Andersson gets off with a fine after altercation with Yamamoto
- The NHL’s Department of Player Safety decided Calgary defenceman Rasmus Andersson was not culpable for what appeared on TV pictures to show a helmet to Kailer Yamamoto’s face as the overzealous Andersson pinned the NHL’s smallest player against the boards Saturday night.
- One-timer aside, McDavid’s hat-trick goal into the empty net Saturday, came with 97 seconds left, fittingly. He’s got 10 regular-season HT’s, three against Calgary.
- Ethan Bear has been playing with Jacob Slavin, Carolina’s best D man, in the early going for the Hurricanes while Warren Foegele was a handful for the Calgary Flames Saturday.
- Foegele, playing on a line with Zack Kassian and Ryan, also showed his strength against Erik Gudbranson on one play in the neutral zone. He looked like he was caught in the train tracks with Gudbranson about to nail him but Foegele skated right through the check.
- In the last 58 games, the Oilers have 51 power-play goals so effectively they are up a goal before the first puck drop.
- Nurse has played 60 of the Oilers 125 minutes this season.
- Yamamoto’s sweat labour continues to be his greatest strength and his PK work has been very strong but he would probably die for a goal as the second-line right-winger.
- Crazy life for Oiler winger Kyle Turris. One game after he gets the shootout winner to beat Vancouver, he plays six shifts and 5:03 because of a raft of penalties against Calgary.
BLH’s Thoughts: So far the Oilers are winning the Keith/Jones trade by default given Caleb Jones messed up his wrist in preseason and the Bear/Foegele one is about even I’d say. Good work by Ken Holland on both accounts.
Man, when Gudbranson had Foegele in his sights, you could hear the whistle of the Terry Tate Pain Train, Whoo! Whooooo! Foegs got caught a little bit, but considering how big he is, it sent Gudbranson flying instead of him.
With regards to the Andersson headbutt, at least Yamamoto knows where the league stands on one player smashing his helmet into the face of an opponent… Killer should go the Gordie Howe route when it comes to getting his payback.
If you don’t know what that means, back in the day when Howe got caught with a cheap shot, he’d take the guy’s number who caught him and wait a few weeks before getting retribution. Now, you might not think that a couple of weeks is a long time or you might think that’s way too long, back then it was a six team league, so if he wanted to, he could’ve got payback the next time the Red Wings would play whoever’s team that clipped him; but he would wait until the dirty play was nearly forgotten and that’s when he would mess that guy up…
Of course Gordie and Yamo are nowhere near the same size of human, but those little guys, they have their tricks… Just ask Kenny Linesman or Theo Fleury.

Random Thoughts: Way Too Early First Impressions
- Zach Hyman – …after watching him score in the home opener and celebrate like it was the first goal of his career, I’d bet the farm that we’re going to see a lot more Hyman jerseys in the crowd before you know it.
- Warren Foegele – I can already tell that Foegele adds an element of size, skill, and speed into our middle six that has been sorely needed for a while. I know the acquisition cost hurts for a lot of us, but I can absolutely appreciate what the new guy brings to the table.
- Duncan Keith – I don’t know what Duncan Keith can do to win over the fanbase entirely, but if he keeps chipping in with responsible minutes and the odd point or two then I think we’d see a lot of water under the bridge before you know it.
- Cody Ceci – I can see Evan Bouchard taking his place on the second pairing sooner than later, no? Either way, colour me skeptical.
- Brendan Perlini – we all knew that his scoring prowess would settle down when the regular season rolled around, I’m liking the size and speed that he brings to the fourth line.
- Colton Sceviour – Oilers fans always love a guy that will stick up for his teammates which is exactly what Sceviour did after Tyler Myers blew up Duncan Keith in the corner in the home opener. The fight didn’t last long, but I think the memory of seeing Sceviour jump in immediately will go a long way for getting the fans on his side.
BLH’s Thoughts: My early season first impression is that this team doesn’t exactly fold up like a cheap tent when Connor and Leon aren’t out on the ice and lines two through four (when it’s on the ice) play old-school grind ’em down hockey. Those lines are like meat tenderizers that soften up the opposition for McDraiJarvi.
The Hockey Writers Rumors
- It’s still far too early to be talking about the Chicago Blackhawks trading Fleury, but this is a goaltender who has one year remaining on his current contract and the Blackhawks have not played well in front of him over the course of the past two games… How long before the trade chatter starts? When you combine the fact his introduction into Chicago was iffy and the team has completely dropped the ball early, should they continue to pile up losses, this could get ugly in a hurry.
- (Jeff) Marek also reports that the Dallas Stars know what defenseman John Klingberg is looking for on his next contract… Marek is under the impression the Stars understand they might lose Klingberg and that’s why they signed Ryan Suter and Jani Hakanpää.
- …the Avalanche apparently called to see if the Sabres would retain salary. It’s not clear how much was being requested, but the Sabres are not willing to keep money in an Eichel trade. Friedman said that the most they’d do is take contracts back. Meanwhile, the Golden Knights have had conversations with the Sabres but Buffalo wants Peyton Krebs and Nick Hague which Vegas doesn’t want to do.
