I’m glad there’s some sort of Edmonton Oilers talk to ponder upon. This is getting ridiculous trying to dig up a new story every day or re-hash something from the past.
So as we’ve all seen, the NHL put out a catchy little promo for their reverse retro jerseys that will be featured in the (shortened) 2020-21 season. Over at Icethetics.com, they’ve posted a few of the rumored unis and more have been leaked on Twitter.
I got this image from the Russian Machine Never Breaks website and here you can get a glimpse of what the rest of the teams RR jerseys will look like sans the logo.
As it pertains to the Oilers’ RR uniform, it looks like the Adidas design team is going way back to the 1970s as inspiration. I can see ideas being borrowed from the Alberta Oilers sweaters as well as the 1978-79 ones.
Local Edmonton media member Tom Gazzola has been on this beat for some time and this is what he had to say a few weeks ago,
Another note on the Oilers front, been told the team's reverse retro uniform will be the standard design in white with orange shoulders & blue trim (like the image included). Not sure if the logo colours have been inverted as well, but that would be a nice touch. 📸: @icethetics pic.twitter.com/u1ZdZcJ0MV

Now, below, courtesy of The Jersey Nerds, is where we’ll find what I’ve heard is the closest thing to what will come out. I’ve only read that there’s one subtle change to the mock-up I’m going to post here.
I’m not sure if that blue piping will be there, maybe something around the numbers to help them pop.
So basically, the jersey Gretzky is wearing above, take the blue out (sans the oil drop, I reckon that could also stay) and that should be what we’re looking at when the Oilers reveal this fancy new venture with Adidas.
Say, when’s the last time you watched some Oilers hockey from when they were in the WHA?
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I love the idea of NHL clubs bringing out a new uniform every year like soccer clubs in Europe do. It keeps things fresh and I’m sure the collector’s out there love it. No doubt, the leagues don’t mind the extra income that it generates.
