There’d been mild speculation throughout the off-season that the Oilers were looking to add an extra defenceman but that really ramped up in the last week or so. More or less since Bob Stauffer put out this tweet,
Not that we are closing in on a RTP…
Wouldn’t be a surprise if the Oilers sign a veteran (75+ NHL GP) left shot Defenceman that could act as a #6/#7 D.— Bob Stauffer (@Bob_Stauffer) December 20, 2020
And then Oilers long-time beat writer replied with this,
Sounds a lot like Slater Koekkoek to me after his play for Chicago against Oilers in Return to Play last August… https://t.co/SGz8bTlN0z

Koekkoek is representated by Ritch Winter if you're wondering and the Oilers are interested in $700,000 deal for an extra D…

The more recent rumors had the Oilers looking at Ben Hutton as well as Koekkoek and after writing this post comparing the two defenders, I’m quite happy they chose the better defender.
The fact of the matter is, the former Lightning/Blackhawk is a really good bet for the money he’s about to get paid. He’s got more experience than Lagesson and Lennstrom and he will be a very serviceable option for Edmonton’s bottom pair. Also, we know that there will be injuries to the likes of Kris Russell or Adam Larsson given the style of hockey they play.
For me, two questions arise from this signing though.
- The Oilers have a massive glut of left-shot defenders now with Nurse, Jones, Russell, Lennstrom, and Lagesson signed on, what’s the plan there?
- Is the club still looking to trade a winger for MORE help on the blue line?
I suppose that begs a third question, are the Oilers on the verge of moving a defenceman?
