- “The depth of this organization has to be the growth of McLeod, Yamamoto, Bouchard, Broberg, Skinner, Savoie, Bourgault, Petrov. That’s how we did it in Detroit, and when I look around, that’s how the best teams do it. It’s homegrown. It’s young players and being patient. We came here and signed Jay Woodcroft, and Woody’s done a great job in developing players down there (in Bakersfield). So I think that’s how you’ve got to get better.”
- A team needs inexpensive contracts for players who provide significant contributions to remain competitive, and to make up for the mistakes by management (and previous management).
BLH’s Thoughts: Of all the rambling done online and during that avail, I thought that quote from Holland above was the key takeaway point. He’s become one of the most successful GMs in hockey history learning from some of the smartest men in hockey history and one of the main things learnt was good teams build from within. In order to do that you’ve got to have a shit ton of patience and in today’s “give it to me now” society, being as patient as Holland is almost goes against the grain.
The other thing patience does is that it provides stability. I’d be willing to bet that when Bob Nicholson and his team were looking over resumes for the GMs position, one of the major attributes they were looking for was somebody that could provide this club with stability. A manager that could withstand the pressures of a rabid fanbase and make moves to improve the team in spite of the mob’s acceptance or rejection of said transactions.
I said it recently, I think this is a Washington Capitals build, but maybe I was wrong. Maybe, it’s a Detroit Red Wings build, but not the Holland build, the Jimmy Devellano one that started when Steve Yzerman was drafted in ’83…
So if we’re in year seven of the McDavid era, that puts us at around 1990 of that build. Only six more years to go!
Sounds like Kane is already signed by Edmonton for 1.5 million pro rated. Technically he needs to be under contract before any suspension kicks in.

The other issue the Oilers run into. You won't register the contract now, and then find out he's suspended the rest of the year. That would be money and cap space that is totally wasted. Curious how long the league investigation will take?

Spector’s Hockey
- CALGARY HERALD: Michael Traikos reports a source close to Kane said the winger wants to play for a championship contender on a one-year deal worth $1.5 million to $2 million. The Toronto Maple Leafs, Carolina Hurricanes, Edmonton Oilers, Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning and Vegas Golden Knights are among the other teams reportedly interested in Kane’s services.
- THE SCORE: Brandon Maron cites the Toronto Star’s Chris Johnston reporting the Vancouver Canucks are open to the idea of trading backup goaltender Jaroslav Halak. He has two performance bonuses in his contract totaling $1.5 million that will count against the Canucks cap payroll for 2022-23 if he reaches them. His current cap hit is $1.5 million.
