The Athletic
3 trade targets that could help Oilers this season and beyond
- James Reimer has a five-team no-trade list and is signed through the end of the 2022-23 season with a $2.25 million cap hit.
- Edmonton might look to a coverage player like Mark Pysyk of the Buffalo Sabres. His numbers this season reflect playing for a team that struggles in most games, but a year ago with the Dallas Stars, he was rock solid.
- Seattle Kraken forward Ryan Donato can play either wing, has good speed and has a history of scoring more than a goal per 60 at five-on-five in the NHL.
BLH’s Thoughts: LT was gracious enough to stick his neck out and include actual trade proposals in his post.
“If the Oilers send Kailer Yamamoto to the Kraken for Donato, does that make them better?”
Sweet Jesus, I nearly shit my pants when I read this one. It certainly does not make them better and if you’re dealing Yamamoto, you’re not making a lateral move, you’re packaging him up in a trade for a better player.
“Oilers trade defenceman Dmitri Samorukov to the Buffalo Sabres for Mark Pysyk ($900,000, UFA this summer) and a 2022 fourth-round selection.”
Not bad, but I wonder if the Oilers organization feel like they’ve already got a couple of Pysyk-types in Koekkoek and Russell? Dima looks like he’ll be moved in trade like the one LT is suggesting however.
“Oilers deal goaltender Mikko Koskinen ($4.5 million, UFA at the end of the season), prospect goaltender Ilya Konovalov and a 2023 second-round selection to the Sharks for goalie James Reimer ($2.25 million, one more season) and a 2022 third-round pick.”
Is that same James Reimer that backstopped the Toronto Maple Leafs to all those post-season victories?

Edmonton Oilers scouting defenceman Jarred Tinordi
- “One player I’m told the Edmonton Oilers are looking at could be defenceman Jarred Tinordi. Oilers pro scout Paul Messier, and his son Tyler, have been seen around rinks in the eastern United States and have had multiple viewings of Tinordi, I’m told.” – Laing
BLH’s Thoughts: Interesting, check out what I wrote way back at the beginning of February.
“I’m very certain that the club is scouting some players in the New York Rangers organization and my guesses are they might be Jarred Tinordi and Morgan Barron.”
Now, what sucks for the Oilers is that Tinordi has only appeared in TWO games this month. On 2/12, against Rochester, he had three shots but was -1 in a 2-1 victory for Hartford and on 2/19 vs. Providence, he put up goose eggs across the stat sheet as his team was handed a 3-0 loss that night.
So not a lot of viewing opportunities for the veteran dman and if I’m being honest, I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing as I feel he’s not really the guy Edmonton should be watching anyhow and considering that the scouting assignment was arranged before Dave Tippett was fired, I’m confident in saying plans have changed thanks to Markus Niemelainen’s emergence.
Do the Oilers need a tough guy on the back end or somebody who can skate and take the body? Tinordi may be a great fighter, but I’m told the boots and conditioning aren’t NHL quality anymore.
So I was told by my west coast source that the Seattle Kraken have had some scouts watching the Oilers recently as well as the Condors down in Bakersfield.
As far as I’ve been aware, the Kraken and the Oilers have been watching each other’s assets all year long, but seeing as we’re creeping up on the trade deadline, things are about to intensify a tad.
I wonder if the Oilers will be looking to shore up their 4th line now that Derek Ryan is on the 4rd line with RNH and Warren Foegele. I’m concerned about going down the stretch with Shore, Sceviour, and one of Benson, Perlini, or Turris taking turns on that line. Kraken players like Colin Blackwell, Mason Appleton, and Marcus Johansson stand out as skaters who’d upgrade that 4th line lickity split.
But what about the defense? Carson Soucy is Bob Stauffer’s favorite to talk about on his radio show, but former Boston Bruin Jeremy Lauzon might just do the trick.
He’s got a bit of “prick” in him and his trigger finger is extremely itchy, if you catch my drift. Lauzon is the kinda guy who’s more apt to drag his teammates into the lion’s den and he fears nobody. I mean, the guy’s taken on Mason Geertsen, Josh Manson, and Matt Tkachuk just to name a few.
Lauzon is a much better option that Jarred Tinordi and it’s not even close.
That being said, Ken Holland’s never been one to go out and trade for toughness like that. He’s grown it from home, but I can’t really recall the last time he traded for somebody who was a fighter based on that attribute alone. If the guy can play AND fight, I reckon Holland would consider that more so.

Spector’s Hockey
- TSN: Pierre LeBrun reports teams are calling the New York Islanders expressing interest in Zdeno Chara.
- MONTREAL HOCKEY NOW: Jimmy Murphy cites Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman recently musing over whether the Montreal Canadiens would consider trading Josh Anderson.
- NYI HOCKEY NOW: Stefen Rosner noted Colorado Avalanche general manager Joe Sakic took in Sunday’s game between the Islanders and Montreal Canadiens. A league source believes he was scouting Isles forward Cal Clutterbuck.
- The Ottawa Sun’s Bruce Garrioch speculates teams could inquire about (Anton) Forsberg. He mentioned the Edmonton Oilers’ well-documented goaltending issues but suggests they might want a netminder with more of a pedigree.
