Evaluating 25 Oilers trades, from goalie upgrades to bold swaps and the ultimate blockbuster

Carson Soucy, 2022 fourth-round pick for Tyson Barrie

  • NHL scout: The Oilers should make this trade all day long. I’ve loved his game since he was in Minnesota. He’s proving that in Seattle. People say his contract’s a little high, but I’d say he’s earning that contract.

Josh Manson, 2023 sixth-round pick for Tyson Barrie

  • Eric Stephens, Ducks writer: Barrie could be a stopgap option since Anaheim doesn’t have a righty defence prospect that’s NHL-ready. The issue I have with that is the Ducks signed a similar, albeit older, player in Kevin Shattenkirk two years ago.

Jake DeBrusk for Kailer Yamamoto

  • NHL scout: Not even close. I don’t know if Yamamoto is better than a third-line guy. He’s had, what, 130 chances to play with Draisaitl and can’t score? He can’t put up points. Yamamoto has failed miserably.

Justin Braun for Kyle Turris, 2023 second-round pick

  • NHL scout: Experience-wise that would help Edmonton on the back end. Plus, Braun is a right-hand shot. That wouldn’t be a bad deal.

Jakob ChychrunLawson Crouse for Philip Broberg, Zack Kassian, Kailer Yamamoto, 2022 first-round pick

  • NHL scout: To get Chychrun, you’re going to need a lot more than those pieces.

Carter Hart for Philip Broberg, Mike Smith, rights to Luca Munzenberger, 2022 first-round pick, 2023 second-round pick

  • Charlie O’Connor, Flyers writer: Hart certainly isn’t a player the Flyers are looking to move, but Broberg, a first and a second isn’t a minimal offer… That said, the Flyers finally have their franchise goalie, and he’s bounced back after an ugly 2020-21 campaign.

Ville Husso for 2022 first-round pick

  • Jeremy Rutherford, Blues writer:  Husso might be the goalie they lean on down the stretch and into the playoffs. The one way I could see this being a remote possibility is if the Blues could flip the first-round pick to acquire a top-four defenceman.
  • NHL scout: If you want to win the Stanley Cup, you need a No. 1 goalie or a 1A. I think Husso’s close to that.

Oil on Whyte

Could Arizona help the Edmonton Oilers move on from Mike Smith?

  • The Coyotes will need a goaltender in the summer, with Vejmelka likely signing an extension as an RFA, and a reunion with Smith could work for them – as cap space is something the team has in spades, and their need to win is still significantly lower than the majority of teams around the league as they look to acquire as many top young prospects as possible through the draft.
  • The Oilers may have to sweeten the deal with a draft pick, but being able to gain $2.2 million in cap space for next season, freeing up room to bring in a new goaltender (potentially Matt Murray in a subsequent deal with the Ottawa Senators, involving some contract retention), would be valuable for general manager Ken Holland.

BLH’s Thoughts: Funny. Since Matt Murray’s gone to Ottawa, I’ve never really considered him as an option for the Oilers. Do you think it would be a prudent decision on their part to bring him in even on a retained salary deal considering he’s been just as inconsistent as the netminders already in Edmonton…

I will say this though, I’m not 100% certain we see Mike Smith in an Oilers jersey past this season. I was told by a source that he’s a bit of a ticking time bomb and that his intensity can find a way to grate on his teammates. Plus he’s not one to take personal accountability when he’s had a poor game, but I imagine that’s not a big deal when he’s on his game and the team is winning. Problem is, when the team is losing and he’s still behaving as such, he becomes that annoying old dog that won’t stop barking at the wind…

You might be thinking that I’m a hypocrite for saying such things about Smith and that’s fine. It’s not true, mind you, when the players play well, they get the benefit of the doubt and when they don’t… Well, let’s just say I’ll call it as I see it, but I really try not to pile on and be an asshole about it.

Now, be it Arizona, Buffalo, New Jersey, Dallas, or any other number of the league’s bottom dwelling teams, Ken Holland would relieve a ton of pressure on himself if he could find a way to make a deal with one of them to give Smith a chance to be a starter with another team.

  • 2. Don’t be surprised, however, if Weber’s $7.6 million cap hit for the next four seasons is traded to a team looking to hit the floor. It’s $6 million of actual cash, total.
  • 3. There was a lot flying around last week about Colorado’s Bowen Byram. First and foremost, wish him the best in his concussion recovery. That’s really all that matters. There were rumours that he wanted a fresh start, the opportunity to resume somewhere else once he is ready. That was denied.
  • 7. Anaheim GM Pat Verbeek made it clear he wants to know the market. That means Nic Deslauriers, Hampus Lindholm, Josh Manson and Rickard Rakell. That doesn’t mean automatic trades, although some — Manson and Rakell — appear more likely than others, with the caveat that it takes just one phone call for things to change… As Jeff Marek reported, last year’s leading scorer, Maxime Comtois, is available too, during a difficult season where he’s been a regular scratch.
  • 15. As part of its GM search, Anaheim asked for permission to speak to Florida assistant GM Paul Krepelka. Apparently, he declined the opportunity because the timing wasn’t right.

BLH’s Thoughts: 2. I’m hearing Arizona is going to get their hands on Weber’s contract…

3. Where there’s smoke… Reading this made me think back to the JT Miller rumor that had Byram heading back to where he played his junior hockey and also that there’s a feeling Joe Sakic is going to go all-in this year.

7. Oilers fans, what would you pay to get Deslauriers, Manson, and Comtois to Edmonton? Talk about upgrading the “give-a-shit” factor on the roster. Would you move Yamamoto, Samorukov, Barrie, and a conditional first rounder if Manson re-signs? I might.

15. If the Oilers miss the playoffs and the decision is made to move on from Ken Holland, I fully expect Paul Krepelka’s name to be amongst those who get an interview because, as I’ve said before, I think starting next year an age of analytics will begin in Edmonton and that’s right up Krepelka’s alley. My knowledge is kinda limited with him but I do know that he was part of Carolina’s resurgence before moving on to Florida to team up with Barry Zito.

I also think Ray Ferraro, Kevin Weekes, and Brian Lawton would get some consideration.
