OILERS NOTES: Kailer Yamamoto told to start firing away
  • Edmonton Oilers winger Kailer Yamamoto has worked on his shot this summer so he can score goals from outside the dangerous blue-paint, where he’s fearless but often overmatched in terms of size.
  • Yamamoto only took 69 shots in 52 games last season, playing a chunk of the time with Leon Draisaitl as his centre, so he was gifted with a superstar passing him the puck. But he’ll need to score more from distance to be a top-six player.

“I think there’s a little bit more zip to his shot, I can see that definitely. A lot of times, it’s a mindset, right? When you get a two-on-one, when you have a chance in that tight space or an open net or breakaway that you really bear down and make the most of it.

  • While Kyle Turris is on right-wing at camp, Tippett also sees him as a part-time centre if he makes the team.
  • Winger Kirill Maksimov, expected to play in Bakersfield after playing last year in Moscow, still isn’t on the ice after missing rookie camp. “He’s finally in the country. He was dealing with some immigration and vaccination stuff. In a day or two, he should be here,” said Tippett

BLH’s Thoughts: I still maintain that Killer was dealing with something that was hindering his ability to take shots last year. I’m pretty jacked to hear that he put a real focus on improving that aspect of his game though and in addition to that, he’s looking a lot thicker. Hopefully that will go a ways to keeping him healthier.

Check out the highlights below from yesterday’s scrimmage and you’ll see Yamo rip a blistering wrister from the slot over Mike Smith’s glove.

QUIET STORM

FIRST DAY LINES AND PAIRS

  • Hyman-McDavid-Puljujarvi. This line might produce a 40+ goal man and two more who hit 20+ tallies. That’s a monster.
  • RNH-Draisaitl-Yamamoto. The logical second line, although names like Warren Foegele and Zack Kassian may find their way into the conversation.
  • Foegele-Ryan-Kassian.  More talent on this third line than we’ve seen in several years.
  • Perlini-Shore-Turris. This is one of two units that could reasonably be called the fourth line.
  • Benson-McLeod-Marody. The new ‘Bulldog’ line is going to get a look, Godspeed to all.
  • Esposito-Malone-Sceviour. Sceviour begins on an AHL line.
  • Nurse-Barrie. They’ll play a ton. I think some believe Bouchard will eventually take over from Barrie on this pairing…
  • Koekkoek-Bouchard. Tippett is hyping Bouchard in a big way, and that does signal to me that the bottom two pairs are going to be equal in playing time at the end of the season, if not sooner.
  • Lagesson-Ceci. Ceci is probably the third or fourth most important defenseman on the team, depending on how much of a role you expect Bouchard to play this season.
  • Broberg-Berglund. This is the sport where miracles come from. Tippett and Holland can’t expect it, can’t say they need it, but they surely do.

BLH’s Thoughts: By the sounds of things, Tyler Benson is stealing the show at camp so far. He’s come in and he means business with his new flowing locks and apparently the boots have gotten quicker.

Now, if you’ve been reading the content here over the summer, I’ve said on plenty of occasions that Tyler Benson probably isn’t an NHL-quality talent, but I’ve also left a caveat. That being, unless he gets faster…

Well, he’s brought a new gear to TC this season and I reckon he’s brought a more cutthroat attitude as well. He’s not taking any prisoners this year and that 4th line LW spot is in his sights. Good on him, I hope he makes it!

Canucks closing in on new deals for RFAs?
  • Darren Dreger noted on the latest Insider Trading that those deals are comparables for the two sides to work with. He states that for Hughes it is more about term than it is about money. “There’s a fair bit of work to get done,” he said.
Leafs spoke with Morgan Rielly about contract this summer
  • According to LeBrun, the two sides are expected to begin discussion again during training camp. However; expectations need to be level set after this summer’s big deal for players like Seth Jones and Dougie Hamilton.
Teams willing to trade for Eichel, with conditions
  • “Eichel has made it clear he’s willing to go anywhere to facilitate a trade,” he wrote. “One of 1/2 doz teams involved tell me a trade is doable as long as the Sabres are willing to add “conditional” clauses around how he performs after surgery. ie .. games played, scoring etc.” – Nick Kypreos
Flames Johnny Gaudreau won’t talk contract
  • “Word is that Johnny Gaudreau will say at his first media availability that he will not answer questions about his contract status now that training camp has started. GM Brad Treliving told Sportsnet’s Eric Francis this week the team won’t be providing updates, either. Gaudreau is an unrestricted free agent in July. No distractions.” – Elliotte Friedman, 32 Thoughts
