NHL Rumors and Speculation

Matt Larking of The Hockey News recently did up a list of five players he thought needed a change of scenery and those players included,

  • Sam Bennett (CGY)
  • Vince Dunn (STL)
  • Travis Dermott (TOR)
  • Anthony Mantha (DET)
  • Jake Virtanen (VAN)

BLH’s Thoughts: Man… Larkin is really stretching with these names… Four out of the five have been on the block for months. Mantha should be a surprise addition to this group, but he isn’t really. Detroit is terrible and has been for most of, if not all of, his career.

Here are five better names that I think could use a change of scenery. Let me know what you think in the comments below.

  • Rasmus Sandin (TOR) – Somehow can’t get into a game for the Leafs this year. Dubas would rather have Dermott on the third pair and Martin Marincin on the taxi squad.
  • Tomas Tatar (MTL) – A recent healthy scratch designed to motivate the player/team? That’ll cut deep but Claude Julien gives zero f*cks.
  • Travis Konecny (PHI) – Can’t seem to see eye-to-eye with Alain Vigneault and was himself a healthy scratch earlier in the year. Has the talent to be a first-liner on another team.
  • Jeff Skinner (BUF) – Whatever curse he’s been stricken with, he can’t shake it no matter what line he’s on or who his linemates are.
  • John Gibson (ANA) – The Ducks are right at the beginning of their rebuild, is that where a player of Gibson’s ilk should be at this point in his career?

Adrian Dater of Colorado Hockey Now has heard that Nashville Predators head coach John Hynes is on the hot seat as his club continues to struggle mightily a month into this season.

BLH’s Thoughts: I don’t know if Hynes should be on the hot seat so early. He has some big name players who are underachieving in a massive way. You’d have to think that if Nashville is going to get out of this, they may need to pay one way or another. Be that by adding sweeteners to get rid of Ryan Johansen and/or Matt Duchene or by choosing to simply be a bad team for a while. It really depends on ownership and I’m not sure they’re big fans of losing money hand over fist, especially when their two big tickets at forward aren’t producing.

“The Bobfather” Bob McKenzie says the rumors of the Pittsburgh Penguins trying to bring back Marc-Andre Fleury are true,

““They tried very hard,” McKenzie said of the Penguins trade efforts. Not only did Rutherford try to pry the Flower from the desert, but interim-GM Patrik Allvin also tried.”

BLH’s Thoughts: I guess the cat’s out of the bag now, eh? The Penguins are looking to upgrade their goaltending. Who would’ve thought that before they re-signed Tristan Jarry and traded Matt Murray that it wouldn’t have mattered which goalie they chose, they’d both end up shitting the bed?

Brian Burke has a reputation of making a big deal at the end of his first year with a new club and that has to be intriguing for fans of the Penguins. I don’t think any of the big boys are going to get moved, but Jason Zucker, Kasperi Kapanen, Bryan Rust, or Jake Guentzel could.

Pittsburgh’s defense is porous to put it politely. I feel like if they could address that in a big way and then the goaltending the next season, that would allow them to remain competitive.

Bob Stauffer (630CHED) has said to keep an eye on Jarry. Now, was he talking to Oilers fans or just in general because Edmonton may need a netminder at some point this year. He’s 28 and in year one of a contract that pays him $3.5M/yr. He also shares an agent with Tyler Benson.
