On this day in 1986, the Edmonton Oilers and the Calgary Flames were embroiled in yet another epic battle of Alberta. With the visiting Oilers up 4-1 in the 2nd period, Marty McSorley had a goal and an assist under his belt and only needed a fight to complete his Gordie Howe Hat Trick…
The Hockey Gods obliged.
At 17:45 of the second frame, Doug Risebrough of the Flames got into a tiff with the aforementioned McSorley at center ice but official Swede Knox decided to step in and stop things before they got started. Unfortunately, he tied up the Oilers’ tough guy and that’s when Risebrough stepped up and threw a massive cheap shot that landed right on the beak of McSorley, a decision he would later regret.
Then all hell broke loose…
