Spector Thinks the Oilers are Fine With Acquiring Duncan Keith and His Full Salary

Coming from an Edmonton Oilers point of view, BLH provides you with excerpts from the latest NHL news, rumors, and speculation from all of the internet’s best sites including Spector’s Hockey, The Fourth Period, NHL Trade Talk, The Hockey Writers, Sportsnet, The Athletic, TSN and more!

Stauffer and Spector on the Duncan Keith Rumors

  • “The expansion draft list, July 17th. And at that time, there is a distinct possibility with Duncan Keith, if he is to move to another organization, that that resolution might come closer to the 15th or 16th of July.” – Stauffer
  • “What do any of these numbers on Duncan Keith mean playing in front of those goaltenders, because I know in Edmonton how poor goaltending affected the analytics of the Edmonton Players and I’m gonna tell you, it can’t be helping Duncan Keith’s numbers either.” – Mark Spector
  • “What they (the Oilers) don’t have is a lot of institutional knowledge. Why does Winnipeg beat you four straight? Why does Chicago come in with aging stars and beat your young stars? What are the things that Edmonton really needs to shore up on? Who are the guys he’s (Keith) going to help out most?” – Mark Spector
  • “All those things that analytics people laugh at, that’s what Duncan Keith is.” – Mark Spector
  • “I bet you my golden retriever that both McDavid and Draisaitl would welcome the presence in the dressing room of a guy like Duncan Keith.” – Mark Spector
  • “Duncan Keith doesn’t have to learn those lessons that we watched Ethan Bear learn this year, he’s already learned them.” – Mark Spector

The Acquisition Cost of Keith

  • “If I’m making the deal and I’m Ken Holland and you’re Stan Bowman, I’m gonna say that I’ll take the player and his salary, you can have a player from our team, not an ‘A’ prospect. I’ll give you Caleb Jones if that’s what everyone’s talking about. I’m also going to trade you Mikko Koskinen who you’re going to buy out. It’s going to cost you 750k on your cap for each of the following two seasons, I’m going to retain half the salary and it’s going to cost me 750k for the next two years because Chicago bought him out for me.” – Mark Spector
  • “That’d allow you to bring in another goaltender in with Mike Smith, which is what I think needs to be done in Edmonton.” – Bob Stauffer
  • “The Oilers are ready to pay him (Keith) $5.5M in my opinion, it’s a question of what you have to give up to a GM that has to trade a player.” – Mark Spector
  • “There are certain prospects that, to me, are no-fly zones. Those prospects are Bouchard or Broberg on defense and Holloway and McLeod up front. And then, I would be leery even having Samorukov and Lavoie in the mix.” – Bob Stauffer
  • “The more salary Chicago eats, the better the prospect you’re going to have to give him. You might be better to pay the money and not give up nearly as good a player.” – Mark Spector
  • “What we’ve got here is a player that wants to play in Edmonton… If you don’t get Duncan Keith, who are you going to go out and get, Bob?” – Mark Spector

BLH’s Thoughts: Tell ya what, I’m said pretty much all I’ve got to say on the Duncan Keith topic. I like Spector’s trade proposal above and I think Oilers fans should get comfortable with the idea that if Keith does go to Edmonton, it might be on his full ticket…

BLH’s Thoughts: If I recall correctly, Friedman didn’t say the Hawks could be forced to buy Keith out, he just wondered if that might be an option they’ll need to consider.

If it ever got to that point though, surely they’d just make the trade with Edmonton and get Koskinen or Neal back and make the buyout option that much cheaper.
