NHL Rumors and Speculation
The Bleacher Report says the following teams are amongst the front-runners for Calgary Flames superstar Johnny Gaudreau should he be traded this year.
- Buffalo Sabres
- Columbus Blue Jackets
- New Jersey Devils
- New York Islanders
- Philadelphia Flyers
BLH’s Thoughts: Could we finally see that Taylor Hall/Gaudreau swap that’s supposedly been in the makings for years now? Would the Flames take a flyer of Jeff Skinner of the Sabres included someone like Dylan Cozens?
New Jersey and Philly would be pretty dreamy landing spots for Johnny Hockey but my feeling is that they need more help on defense than on the wing. As for the Islanders, a Barzal/Gaudreau pairing would be amazing to watch, who does the Islanders sacrifice to get it? Jordan Eberle? Josh Bailey?
According to The Fourth Period, the Columbus Blue Jackets are looking at Calgary Flames forward Sam Bennett.
“Columbus GM Jarmo Kekalainen has reached out to the Calgary Flames about forward Sam Bennett, who plays both centre and the wing, but he isn’t the only one. TFP reported last week the Toronto Maple Leafs have also expressed some level of interest in Bennett, while the Anaheim Ducks have also been linked to the 24-year-old.”
BLH’s Thoughts: Bennett would fit right in with John Tortorella, wouldn’t he? If Jack Roslovic is their no.1 center and Sam Bennett is their no.2, on paper, that sounds decent. It’s not amazing, mind you, as we know the Flames center isn’t the most productive regular season player. That said, if the team could get to the playoffs, that’s most likely when that trade would pay off. Would a David Savard for Bennet deal make sense if the money could get worked out?
Sportsnet’s Dan Murphy believes this four-game set with Calgary Flames could make or break the short-term future of the Vancouver Canucks.
“I believe this upcoming four-game series with the Flames might provide an answer to this question. If things continue to go pear shaped for the Canucks, say they go 1-3 versus Calgary and look bad in the process, I wouldn’t be surprised to see ownership step in and do something.”
BLH’s Thoughts: Hey, I didn’t think the Canucks would be this bad. Adding Nate Schmidt and Braden Holtby was supposed to soften the sting of losing Jacob Markstrom, Chris Tanev, and Josh Leivo, right? Apparently, it hasn’t though and those that I talk to in the market say the same as Murphy. It wouldn’t shock me to start hearing some coaching rumors soon. Although, I’m not certain they’d hire a coach outright, maybe just bring someone in to finish the year and then when ownership turfs Jim Benning, the new GM can hire his own guy.
