What do you think of this Oilers trade proposal from 32 Thoughts?
- “One of our faithful listeners was making trade suggestions to me via DM today and he suggested Jake Allen and Arturi Lehkonen to Edmonton for Mikko Koskinen, Kyle Turris, Xavier Bourgault, and a first-round pick.” – Friedman
- We’ll start with Koskinen and Allen, which is at best a marginal upgrade for Edmonton in net.
- When Allen is at his best, it’s because he’s playing a limited amount, like in 2019-20 when he backed up Jordan Binnington and put up a .927 save percentage.
- While Lehkonen is a good player, an obvious upgrade over Turris who’s only part of the deal to make the money work, a winger isn’t Edmonton’s primary position of need.
- If they’re paying to add a position player, it would ideally be a third-line centre or a veteran defenceman.
BLH’s Thoughts: Yeah… This is a pretty daft offer. Take Bourgault out and throw in Samorukov and Marody. I don’t think these two have much of a future in Edmonton.
I will say this though, the Allen/Koskinen swap seems like a lateral move but maybe the simple notion of a change in the locker room would spark some positive vibes in Edmonton. More bluntly, the team wouldn’t have to start games wondering if Mikko is going to let in the first goal of the game or give the puck away. Crassly put, there’d be a sense of relief if Koskinen was playing for another team and if I had to guess, that’d be a two-way street.
The Cult of Hockey
Top 10 reasons I’m still optimistic about the Edmonton Oilers this season
- 1. Leon Draisaitl’s “we’re not quitting” speech in Toronto.
- 2. Connor McDavid.
- 3. Mike Smith is back, at least for now.
- 4. Duncan Keith and Tyson Barrie are both playing better hockey as of late.
- 5. Zach Hyman and Jesse Puljujarvi.
- 6. Edmonton’s power play.
- 7. Cody Ceci.
- 8. Darnell Nurse.
- 9. Role players stepping up.
- 10. Ken Holland still has moves to make.
BLH’s Thoughts: There’s lots of season left and now that nearly the entire roster has been put into COVID protocol, they’re good to go for 90 days. So if they can stay healthy in other aspects of the game, we’re going to see what this roster can do as it was envisioned this summer.
It’s #10 that has be optimistic. The kids coming up from Bakersfield, the potential trades that could be made. With all this road left in the year, there’s still time and any team with TWO Hart Trophy winners on it should never be counted out.
“…if Holland needs to make that bold move, it’s available, and it just might pay off.”
The Daily Goal Horn
- “A league source told The Athletic recently that the Rangers were very close to dealing Georgiev before Shesterkin’s latest injury,” Arthur Staple said.
- Recently, Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos said that the Oilers are interested in acquiring him. Were they the team that almost got him?
BLH’s Thoughts: Wouldn’t that have been something? Maybe it still happens, but I’ll be very curious what Georgiev goes for when that deal does get consumated.
